A .38/55 might do the same things and be easier to get brass for? That said, I had a Cogswell and Harrison double that killed the snot out of everything I shot at. I sold it to Frank Beller and try to get it back about once every six months. He won't budge, though! Mean man!

I shot conventional Hornady 270 bullets and they held up well on animals as big as zebra.

What's your E-Mail address, & I'll send you some load data. It's a great cartridge for deer & black bear. I shoot Speer 235 gr. bullets for fun, & the Judge's rifle is wicked with those loads. When I die, the Judge gets his rifle back, but he has to take my wife also.

I'm building it on a M-44 action, I'm thinking that all I'll have to do is rebarrel it as the bolt is set up for flanged cases already and is very close on mag length.

Thanks
Phil

It's head size is that of the .303 British. Brass is available from Bertram. It could be made from .405 WCF brass, but the rim would need to be thinned.

My notebook says Seyfried had an article in the 02-2004 Handloader suggesting a 270 gn Hornady RN with about 45 gn of Reloder 15, to match original ballistics. In other forums, I've seen the 270 gn Woodleigh recommended. Others prefer the 235 gn Speer for deer sized game.

CotW 8th edition basically doesn't have any useful info on the .375 2-1/2" - a picture, a bit of text and factory ballistics (a 270 gr at 2000 fps).

Other sources have a bit more, including that besides the typical 270 grain load rated at 14 tons pressure, there was at one point a 320 grain load at 17 tons, though I've never seen an example of either a cartridge so loaded or a rifle marked to take it.

While a bit underpowered by modern standards the couple I've had have been nicely accurate and like JudgeG says very satisfying on appropriate sized game. I like it - it's sorta the modernised (for 1900 !) smokeless version of the .450 3-1/4 BPE. Mine have liked IMR3031 and 4895 at about factory levels.

The .375 2 1/2" Flanged NE was offered in several loadings, the most common being 40 grains Cordite and either a 270 grain or a 300 grain bullet. The 40 Cordite - 320 grain loading was the .375 No. 2, which was indeed loaded. I've seen a couple of Holland & Holland rifles chambered for it.

Pressure is low with the 270 grain load - 14 tons BaseCUP was the old standard. The cartridge is currently standardized by CIP. www.intermin.fi/intermin/images.nsf/files/BOE765375DA00...A/$file/TABIIcal.pdf. Max average chamber pressure is 31,908 PSI.

Well crap. I can't get the link to work right. Just google "CIP Rimmed Cartridges" and a link to the CIP drawings in pdf format will come up on the second page.

400 NE, I'd never heard of the .375 No.2. What sort of fps rating did they have for that one, in what length barrel? Did they use a longer cartridge length, or was it kept to about 3.1" as well? Using QuickLOAD, I'd estimate about a 25 fps drop, but QL isn't really accurate enough for those sort of predictions.

I don't know for sure. I imagine about 1900 fps in 28" barrels. OAL looks to have been 3.250, same case.

BTW, Elmer Keith was extremely fond of this cartridge. His was a Best oval bore Lancaster sidelock marked and regulated for the .375 No. 2 load.
