.450/400 Ruger #1 Login/Join

Okay guys, I went and bought the first .450/400 Ruger to show up in my small Texas town. Now come the questions. Anyone found a good source of brass or bullets? I'm ordering my reloading dies this evening, and studying up on all the ancient texts I have for the .450/400 and .400 Jeffery. I came to the belief that this rifle will have the maximum recoil my arthritis can handle, so I want to do it up right. Anyone with experience with the Ruger #1 in this caliber? At the very least, this ought to be the meanest wild hog killer in the Navasota River bottoms!

switch recoil pads to a good pad, and add a mercury tube in the stock if you want. With these additions, you can shoot it all day long.

Hornady makes brass. Midway USA should have most of the supplies needed for it.

I haven't used a #1 yet in that caliber, but I have used a 470 NE and 45/120 in the same gun, both with heavy loads.

They are fun for sure!!!!

FYI anyone out there doing the .450/400, I've received Hornaday loaded ammo from Cheaper n Dirt (super fast I must add), and have dies and components on order from Grafs, Midway and Huntingtons. There is interest in the cartridge. Even my PH seems positive about the Ruger, so I guess I am now in line for two more safaris.

I reload the 450/400. Hornady brass and bullets will serve you well. I have no experience with Hornady solids, however Woodleigh solids do a great job.

Some of my fellow 400 Jeffery owners have worked up reduced loads and cast bullet loads.

I hope you enjoy your rifle and the cartridge.

I am getting excited about loading for and shooting this rifle. I just discovered reloading information from my grandfather in his copy of Sharpe's "Complete Guide to Handloading", which fascinates me. His info is dated March 1, 1938, and uses such powders as HiVel#2, 17 1/2, 4064, and 3031. That's guidance from the grave. I do hope I enjoy this old cartridge.

A little overkill but I have used this rifle in the close confines of my hunting areas. Deer, Coyotes and Raccoons have been shot where clear shots are less than 40 yds. I love this Ruger rifle.

Gosh, I thought I was the only one with a copy of Sharpe's? Cool!

Hornady's site should provide you with load information.

64 grains of RL-15 and a foam plug or a tuft of Darcon pillow filling is a good load. I use Federal 215s primers.

If I can be of any assistance please contact me directly at rkmojo@aol.com

I only put on a limbsaver pad and it shoots very nice. Thus far only a piggy. I am planning on taking it to Africa for Lion this year and have only used Hornady fodder. I do like it almost as much as my #1 in 9.3X74.
