bartsche50-90 first time

shot a 50-90 with a 600 grain bullet today for the first time. Actually it was two shots at a pig silohette at 300 yards. In the middle 4" apart with open sights. Was super impressed. My shoulder said two shots were enough.

Idaho SharpshooterYep! My brother shoots a Shiloh 50-90 for Silhouettes. 650gr Brooks RN bullet. His buddy has a 10 pound 50-140, fullhouse loads of black and the same bullet.

Didn't calculate it but the rifle weighed 15 lbs. and the bullet was moving about 1200 fps.at the muzzle.

That is a fairly light load for a .50-90 but a very comfortable with that 15# rifle.

Weight of firearm in lbs..........12#

well it's a start?????? Ya kinda lost me there Jeff.
You have me at a disadvantage here. The only black powder experience was with the cannons I use to build. Of course they weighed more than 15# and I never chronographed one.
I haven't an inkling what constitutes respectable velocities in this large caliber cast bullet game, but an avid player I shoot with once in a while, hits the steel pig consistantly at 600 yds. with a number of his ancient, open sighted 45-70s pushing a 550 grain bullet at 1100 fps. which I measured.

For my edification what would be considered a resonable velocity for that 50-90 and the 600 grain bullet?

Idaho SharpshooterJeffe is probably thinking about my 550 Gibbs which shoots the same weight solid at 2550+fps in an eleven pound rifle...
Don't let him get your goat, he's just messin' with you a little. Come up to our place in the Boise, Idaho, area and I'll let you shoot all my toys some weekend. Or weekday, I'm retired now.

jeffeossoRoger,
its a start .. any 50-90 or 45/70 load is a START at shooting bigbores.
its teasing, sure enough, but good natured teasing
