Hey guys! As you may know I'm building a custom mauser in 458 Win Mag on a standard action. I was getting ready to order the remaining parts in a couple days. Spring, follower etc. My question is since the 458 is a straight walled cartridge, do i have to get a follower with some special angle to it to get it to feed correctly, and do i need an extra heavy spring? Or would a standard weight spring and a regular style follower be good enough? I appreciate all the help with my odd questions! Thanks again!! Mike

my gunsmith does standard 98's into magnums by measuring the diameters of both cartridges and milling one-half the diameter difference off of the follower and fitting from there. It is easier to buy one from Brownell's. Rich DRSS Knowledge not shared is knowledge lost...

Mike, I've seen several work just fine with the standard 8x57 military follower in an unmodified 98 magazine. The only work was an the rails and a slight bevel at the chamber mouth. It's a well traveled path. If you can get a custom follwer - magazine box - relieved or bellied floor plate..... you can get perfect feeding and an extra round or two of capacity. Ryan Breeding had a little 458 at SCI that was built on a military 98 that held 4 down-1 up. TMc

If its going to be a full custom rifle then buy custom bottom metal from Brownells..If you are modifying a std action bottom metal then you should open up the box and use a magnum follower, but you don't have to do that, the std follower seems to work pretty well but it will have a tendency to tip forward if you try and load it too fast..It's not much cost to fit a mag follower to your rifle.
