14.5MM point detonating projectiles in a .585 gun? Login/Join

I was looking around on the web and found some 14.5MM point detonating projectiles that they say can be loaded in 20ga hulls with a wrap or two of electrical tape. They're 2oz (875gr) and a 14.5mm projectile is .5709" right? (.50/12.7= .03937x14.5= .570865")

Could a 14.5mm projectile be tightly wrapped with teflon tape (for pluming fixtures) or something else and be loaded in a .577 T-Rex or .577 Snider? Velocity would be about 500fps with a light charge of XMP5744.

I'm just curious. [Wink]

I sure as heck would not use tape. If you find some .005 paper ,that would require three wraps to .585. That's generally too much for any accuracy but would get it down the barrel. Lubricate with Rooster Red. What exactly is a point detonating bullet? If It's a bullet containing an explosive charge, I'd be darn cautious if I were you! I've seen some .50 BMG Raufloss bullets that were considered destructive devices and I don't think it's even legal to own one.-Rob

While it might shoot, it's illegal, in the US, to have an explosive bullet.

On the other hand, Didn't Ross Sig, write about a 4bore exploding shell?

Robgunbuilder,

Go to the Misc Items and look at the 7th one from the bottom. This is where I was looking. Paper would probably be a better idea. They suggest loading it in a 20ga hull. Mabey a 20ga with a rifled barrel would work the best IF I wanted to shoot these things.

Jeffeosso,
"While it might shoot, it's illegal, in the US, to have an explosive bullet."

If this is true, why are MILLIONS of Incendiary bullets sold/shot each year? I'm not ragging on you, just pointing out the facts. Incendiary/explosive bullets are everywhere for .510" guns. They are a lot of fun. Heck, I even have about 200 .308" API bullets. Also, I do remember the Xbore guns having exploding shells. Didn't he 'ward off' some unfriendly natives in a canoe with a couple shots from his gun?

BMG,
that's a good point, and the answer is that an explosive bullet is not the same as an incendary. Below is a relativly long snipette from the ATF/Gun Control act of 1986
http://www.atf.treas.gov/pub/fire-explo_pub/gca.htm

(4) The term "destructive device" means--
(A) any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas --
(i) bomb,
(ii) grenade,
(iii) rocket having a propellant charge of more than four ounces,
(iv) missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce
(v) mine, or
(vi) device similar to any of the devices described in the preceding clauses;

(B) any type of weapon (other than a shotgun or a shotgun shell which the Secretary finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable
for sporting purposes) by whatever name known which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant, and which has any barrel with a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter; and (C) any combination of parts either designed or intended for use in converting any device into any destructive device described in
subparagraph (A) or (B) and from which a destructive device may be readily assembled.

The term "destructive device" shall not include any device which is neither designed nor redesigned for use as a weapon; any device, although originally designed for use as a weapon, which is redesigned for use as a signaling, pyrotechnic

BMG- thanks for the website address. I looked at it! I would not let that thing foul the bore of your beautiful T-Rex. I'd find a cheap 20 ga. for that thing!-Rob

Other than the legalities etc. I use computer labels as paper patches for my .475 bullets. My mold has the portion behind the driving bands reduced so that two full wraps brings it up to caliber and they work great. The accuracy is fine and it's very economical to shoot.

I do not know of any incendiary/explosive projectiles of 0.510" other than those that currently belong to the gub'mint. There are lots of incendiary projectiles available surplus for consumer though.
Ok, that has flash powder in it or some other firecracker type composition. When you said "detonating" I take that to be high-explosive.

Thanks for the thoughts guys,
It was more of a 'holy cow/what if' type of idea and something to share/think about. If I did it, the rifled 20ga thing would be the best of ideas. Heck, I have a rifled 12ga right now. With a few wraps of computer lables...
