How do you suppose they got that much velocity? Surely, they would not try yet again to inflate the numbers would they? If it's even close to that, I'd buy some, despite the high cost ($12-$15/rd. through Midway).

I don't see that it much matters. If they are getting that in a 24" it may drop below 2200 fps in a 22" barrel, but it is still >2150 fps, which is the standard. As long as it is in the 2100+ fps range, it is pretty much enough.

Buy some and find out.

The Hornaday manual list loads in this range, and that is published data for us amateurs.

But like Will says, +2100fps will do the job on anything.

Here are some loads from Hdgdon's manual #26

1. 500 grains....75.0 gr H-335 2129'/sec
2. 500 grains....74.0 grains H-4895 2156'/sec
2. 500 grains....72 gr IMR-4895 2170'/sec

It seems that 2150 is doable and with a little imaginative loading a bit more....just load a slightly slower powder and compress it heavily.

The Hornaday manual shows higher velocity loads across the powders than Hogdon (resulting from higher max loads of the Hogdon powders). But for me AA 2230 gives 2145fps with a 500gr Woodleigh solid at close to a Hornaday starting load. The Hornaday maual list the same loads now as when it made the "old" steel jacketed solids.

With AA 2230, Hornaday indicates up to 2250fps. (Note: I fixed a typo in the sentence which erroneously substituted AA 2250 for the correct AA 2230.)

FYI, my 2145fps load has been pressure tested and is well below max.

Agree that 2240 fps can be achieved, but it seems a lot for a factory loading given the liability issues etc. I recall a lawsuit against Federal regarding faulty performance of one of their Trophy Bonded loads in Africa.

Most factory loadings in most cartridges aren't too far from max but the factory Win Mag stuff - not the Hornaday Heavy Mag or this loading, I'm betting - tests pretty meek.

Are there any other premium bullets available [other than the Woodleigh] in 500gr that are suitable for elephant hunting with the 458 WinMag?

My BRNO zkk602 has a really long magazine, can I seat the bullets out a bit to allow more powder without compression?

Is the heavier bullet that much better than the 450gr Barnes Banded to make it worth the effort?

The new Hornady solid should work.

I suspect most 458's with the long throats are really Lotts in hiding. As long as the powder is compressed some the bullet won't go anywhere without crimping.

The 64 dollar question. Probably not worth the effort.
