Are 8 gauge industrial hulls good for anything? Can they be reloaded and shot out of a regular 8 gauge?
Dean
I also posted this in the shotgun section. I just thought bigbore guys are the most likely to shoot an 8 gauge.

Ed Hubel could better answer your question than I could....

But I'd say they could be used in a regular 8 gauge as long as the chamber was the correct length.....

Ed is developing the "8 gauge from hell" and I've talked to him about building one on an action I've got....

On his recommendation I purchased some industrial hulls to get started with....

They cannot be used as is. The industrial shells are belted, so that they cannot be chambered into an 8 bore shotgun. IF the belts are turned off, then they can be reloaded for (shotgun/bore rifle) use.(trim lenght if needed)

I beleive I have seen new, regular type 8 gauge hulls for sell in either Graf&sons or one of the other shot shell specilty copmpanies catalogs.

They do have a step in the brass.I was guessing so no one would try and shoot them out of a regular gun. I am looking to see if it can be turned off. I was just cleaning up over 50 of them wondering what they are good for.

The 8 ga industrials have an extra base
piece crimped on the original base, and it comes up halfway up on the base cup, thus giving a little step. Waterfowl hunters in UK are taking part of the extra thickness
off, that makes the step
and that way they are using hulls
in regular chambers. Regular chambers are
about .012 bigger at the base than regular hulls, so you don't have to take off
all of the stepped section down to original
base cup.A Uk guy reported that his chamber was large enough he didn't have to take any off.
The hulls are thicker also and last a lot longer. The plastic is twice as thick as
in 12ga hulls. And the REM ones I have
here are compression formed one piece base and
sides. Super strong.I'm taking mine down leaving
half the thickness of the step on a taper to feed smooth, and then it matches
the long brass ones I make from
20mm Suzy brass.Hence 8GA FH. Make the chamber to fit and it still will fire regular base
cases,which some ou there.I got 50 new
industrials primed for 35 bucks. They will
do many loads each. The cases are made thick ,as the factory kiln gun loads are little
over 8000 ft lbs. Barrel is being done now
for me, and my chamber I will make
when barrel is here will do the reworked
plastic industrial, regular, long brass ones.
I can do the rework in 3 min on my case
spinner/lathe.I just got a roll crimper
for 8ga slugs to go in drill press.Ed
