Didn't really have anything to contribute to the article, but I always thought that was a neat line and somewhat applicable to the subject.

I have hunted with a couple of Ruger No1's. Both shot better than a hunting rifle needs to. I would not hesitate to hunt Dangerous Game with a No1 in a suitable caliber. I prefer a double, but I could "get by" with a single shot.

I have hunted moose with my 45-70 Ruger #1.Ok,taken few down BUT...it`s a singleshot.I have been also in bear hunt here,(sofar not killed a bear,yet)I don`t hear any odd sound of my knees, but still i`m little worried how fast I reload and fire the second time,if,if...I have a Sako Finnbear in 30-06,fullstock carbine,but I would like to use this 45-70,loads are more powerfull than in 30-06 plus other reasons aswell.I plan to inwest in new heawier rifle,like 375H&H or 416 or 338Lapua or doublebarrels into my Valmet shotgun in 45-70 cal.Please give your comments,I have reloaded since -75.Which cal should I choose,availability of bullets/low costs.etc.I�m going to testshoot theese doubles within theese days.

How close are your shots at moose in Finland? Are you hunting them in beech thickets at close range? If so, I think your .45-70 Ruger with at least a 350 grain Hornady at 2000 or so would be plenty. Then again, I bet a few moose have fallen to some of those wonderful Sako or VKT M-39s in 7.62 X 53, with a decent 200-grain bullet, eh? If you are shooting at 200 yards or more, it would probably be hard to find a better gun than the .375. The .338 Lapua is a bit of a beast in the recoil department, and the old H&H has so much tradition going for it!

You must know some Finn or how did ya know that Finland is called Suomi in our own language..I was surprised.
Shooting range in Finland waries,depending of in which part you hunt.In the western part is agricultural area where shooting distances are longer,but I hunt on the eastborder towards Russia,where the real forests are.
Majority of our bear population is also here in eastside.Here the distances are or can be wery short,awerage maybe 35 yds.
Once I shot a moose which was galoping towards me with full speed,from only 5 meters = 5.5yds. It almost hit me,I could not aim anymore,I dropped my Ruger#1 down to my hip and fired right to moose cows chest,the animal fell down few meters away from me.
The load I use is as follows: Bullet Hornadys 4512# 350gr,load 3.6g Lapua nammo N-130 powder.=5000J muzzle energy.
Old Sako and VKT rifles,in 7.62/53R, are and was the main rifles for decades here,as we used theese in WW II against Russia.Ofcourse after the war in hunting etc.Lot of "mooserifles" was made of theese by rebarreling into 9.3/53R .The bigger bullet performed beter in our landscape in thiskind of use
Sometimes I still meet theese old warhorses,nowadays they are often so modified that only the action is of origin.
I think that I will go to 45-70 doublebarrel or to 375H&H.In hunt I use my 30-06 or 45-70 now,depending of situation and target.I need an powerfull rifle alternative,bear is the target.Distance can be short or long,but I must hawe possibility to second shot fast,if needed.
Two weeks ago I shot one moose cow,fast moowing,distance was 110yds,animal was ziczacking between rocks and trees,fell with one shot,as usual
I am now 48 yrs old,(6`3" and 103kg)shooten and doing competition 30 years,guns are my life hobby.I reload cals .222Rem,.357mag,.44mag,.45LC,45Colt,30-30Win,.22-250,308,30-06,45-70.
I hawe builded an real reloading setup for me,with single and progressive pressses(RCBS)I could send a pic,but now Im not on my own pc,I must try later.Mostly I reload 3006,as I practise,hunt and do competition with it.

If I had more time to shoot and get better at it, I might give it a try, but at my advancing age, I an loathe to risking shortening my projected time on Earth any more than I have to. Still, a Ruger #1 or #3 re-barreled and well stocked to make up a nice .450/.400 would be a tempting project and a fun thing to take to Africa.
