Hi all, my Pac-Nor 470 barrels came in today. It only took like 3 weeks, they said about 7 weeks in their email. The barrels look great and have a huge hole in the end. Now I'm just waiting on my Reamer and a decision on sights. I'm thinking either a 3 leaf express or ghost ring rear and a WartHog Ivory bead up front.
What should a 470NE double weigh? 10 lbs?

At 10 lbs the recoil will be manageable, although not exactly pleasant. Personally I would consider 9 to 9.5 pounds the extreme at the light weight end of the scale, and I would be tempted to go with 11 or 11.5 pounds to make it more shootable personally.

Hi Lar45,
With ordering barrels as you've mentioned does that mean you are trying to build a 470 double by yourself from scratch? That woukld be quite an undertaking if so and the best of luck to you.
Take good care,
Dave

My 450 No2 weighs 11 3/4 lbs.[28"bbls, which I really like] I can shoot it 50 rounds in a couple of hours with out a sore shoulder. It is not too heavy to carry. I recommend 10.5 to 11.5 lbs. Check the weights of the British rifles made between the wars, they knew what they were doing.

It won't be totally from scratch. I'm starting from a 10 ga double, but doing all the work myself.
A buddy and I are looking into building a pair of Howdas from scratch except for the barrels. We are going to try and patteren them after my 16 bore pinfire, except make them in 50-70 centerfire. I'm getting some 4140 from a local steel place. I'm thinking the Anson and Deeley Box lock style action is a bit beyond me at the present, so we are looking into other locking styles that might be stronger than the Lefaux, but still possible to build on my lathe and mill. I think I could add a dolls head without too many problems, that may help.
It may be a waste of time, but I'm going to give it a try. My 16yo Daughter thinks she wants to get into engraving. I'm building a set of tools for her to start with, and have her practice on small pieces of plate from the drop bin. When she gets good enough, I'll have her give it a try on my Win 94.

Lars,
Please keep us all posted as that is a VERY big undertaking. I have seen this talked about many times, but very few make the leap. My hats off to ya!.

I live in Fort Collins, CO. There is a machinest near here who is quite the big bore fan and recently published a book about converting SxS shotguns to double rifles. The book was advertised in either Shogun News or Gun List a while back. His name is Ellis Brown. If anyone wants, I can try and get the exact title of the book and the publisher, or where you can buy it. The guy did some work for me and he is one hell of a machinest. The book is very informative, covering different actions, regulating, all the machining to be done and almost a step by step instruction manual. A while back I handled one he did in .450 3 1/4" (I think that was the caliber) and it was very impressive. You can either send me a private e-mail or if anyone wants I will just post the information on this forum..regards

Thanks for the link, I just ordered it.
I started a page on the Project and will add pics as the project progress.

Calibros from Norway sent me a Warthog tusk to use for the front sight. I think I'll get some express sights from Brownells with interchangable front blades to practice on with makeing the ivory bead.

The wife thinks I'm nuts, but atleast I'm spending my spare time in the garage and not out with some young college girl. [Eek!] So she is fairly tolerant and understanding.

My 470 NE is about 11 lbs and does not have a recoil pad and is still comfortable to shoot as long as you don't pull both triggers at once.
