I was going to build a new gun and settled on the Marlin 45/70 G stainless. I figured the short barrel and fast action would make this an excellent DG gun. I was wondering if the 300gr winchester loads have enough power for buff and will I need a different barrel with a different twist to stabilize the heavier bullets like the super tough 405 Rem load? I figured the 300gr load should work as the 375 H&H is regarded as marginally adequate for DG with this load(300gr) , so I won't need the big power house 405's. Am I wrong on this?

250gr Hollow points are definitely the way I'd go. They get more velocity which is preferable on thick skinned DG. Wink

see, I think these two guys are all wet! I think a soft lead bullet at 1500fps is THE answer. Look at what they did to the buffalo in this country. The ones in Africa aren't much different from what I hear. Mostly, it's like walking down to a feedlot and picking one out to shoot. After all, cows are cows, right?

Last time I was Buffalo hunting my 700 NE melted a firing pin from the hot weather and repeated firings all day. (There were a lot of Buff to kill) So I started using this big custom knife I had packed for the trip. he I figured, why even carry the stupid rifle around when the knife was more reliable. Anyway, I only hunt Buffalo with a knife now.
