FAST996Lazzeroni 470 bibamufu
I was wondering if this cartridge can be done in a post 64 win M70 375 or 300 rum . The diameter is .580 which might be too big but the length at 2.80 is good. Just wondering as a alternative to the 470 Capstick.
The brass is about 44 bucks per 20 which isn't to bad.

CanuckA better (although similar) option, IMHO, is the 470 Mbogo. You don't need Lazzeroni's proprietary brass...you can just form 416 Rigby Basic brass.
Check it out...

FAST996But can it work in a M70 action or is the question moot? I always thought the rigby case was to big for the win action. Just wondering because I have host and was thinking about a 470'ish option other than the capstick.

j stoviakI have a warbird done on a model 7o. It is the same parent case just smaller bullet so I would think it's possible. You will only get 2 down with this big case on a model 70 without alot of extra time and money.

gumboot458........I think the Rigby case is too big for the model 70 ,.,
.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Hello J,
Can you tell me what was done to your M70 to make the conversion work and what was the rifle originally chambered for? Thanks

It has been said that the Winchester Custom Shop built a .416 Rigby on the M70 Classic.
Maybe O.K. with low pressure .416 Rigby classic ballistics, kept down to about 40Kpsi.
Maybe not such a good idea with Lazzeroni max pressures.

j stoviakI have 2 done on the model 70. The 1st was a warbird on a Laredo 7mmrem mag. The bolt face was opened up, claw reworked, bigger 375 length magazine installed and back of action ejection port cut back like a model 70 express length action and new barrel. The 2nd was a laredo in 7mm stw converted to 7mm firebird. this one was easier no magazine work or hogging out the back of action. Kreiger did both when they were still doing some smithing.

j stoviakno pressure problems the warbird has over 1000 rounds through it driving a 180 grain bullet at 3550 down the 28 inch barrel. Feeds slick and is true control feed. feeds much better than my wsm winchesters which tend to "pop up" sometimes.

As far as I know Winchester made 2 416 Rigby actions and both are held by a cut rifle barrel maker.
Lazzeroni lists factory cup pressures at 63,000 for the warbird and for the .416 meteor 53,000. I would be interested to see what the bibamufu is. The warbird is one hot mutha.

Is that Krieger or Freddy Kruger that likes skeletonized M70's?

Bwana-beYup. I'd be worried about the bolt thrust issue on either of the cases with 63k psi loads.
The Mbogo could easily be shortened to 3.6" COL and use cheaper/availabler brass. Don't think you'd even need to trim the brass for that .150" difference.

Badger made many barrels for the custom shop and was the right guy at right place at the right time.

Did some looking around and don't see how I missed it. The 470 AR looks to be the ticket for another M70 RUM conversion. Thanks

RobgunbuilderWhile it would be far from my first choice, I see no reason this could not be done on a M70. Rigby made .416's on M98's and the first 585 NYATI's were also made on M98's. 500 grs had a .585 NYATI on a M70 as I remember. You need to know where and how to open a M70 action up for such a large cartridge and yes the number of rounds will be two or three max. I also would reccomend a .470 Mbogo or .470 AR as a alternative.-Rob
