Shot my A-Square mono-solids in my 404 this afternoon. I'd love to be able to tell you the velocity I achieved with 77 grains of Re. 15, but I can't. When I touched off the first round, the muzzle blast knocked over the tripod holding my chrony, and broke the head off. I should have known, because the tripod was set on a decline, making it front-heavy. No one to blame but myself. Anyway, the bullets shot very good! POI was close to exactly the same as with 400-grain A-Frames. I would have no trouble interchanging these rounds on a hunt. As for velocity, I won't know for sure what I'm getting with the solids until I get my other chrony and tripod back from a friend that has it borrowed, but the book says it should be somewhere between 2350 and 2400 fps. Not much that this pill couldn't cure, as long as I do my part and place it in the right spot.

With 77 gr. of RL-15 you should be getting about 2250 to 2300 FPS...just a guess as I have not loaded that soft in my 404.. I get 2410 FPS with 80 grs. of RL-15 and 2530 FPS with 84 grs. of RL-15...all chronograped with Woodleigh and Swift bullets..I get a bit more more with 370 gr. Northforks and another grain of RL-5...I get about another 50 FPS with Woodleigh solids.

Quote: Well, at least you have a proven "tripod load". With all those greenie tourists around you never know when they might sick one of their "attack tripods" on you . Now you can rest assured that you have a one shot stopping load there . Jim

How many of you can say that you have a "Proven Tripod Load" Figure if I can take out the ever-so-hard-to-kill tripod, buffalo, rhino and even Jumbo himself should be a snap.

GaHunter: Been there and done that... and with a .404 of course! Is this going to be your buffalo load? When are you leaving?

Earn, Yes, this is to be my buffalo load. I had to go to the A-Squares because Barns and Bridger quit making them (in .423 caliber). In fact, the sources for solids in .423, especially mono-solids, are getting mighty slim. Don't know when I'll get back to Africa. I would definitely like to go this year, but the construction of my trophy room to hold all the animals from LAST year is running way over budget. Besides, if you read my story in the African Hunting Forum about the killer thorns, you will see why the thought of returning to that dangerous environment strikes terror in my heart!
