Just wondering about reloading for this round -- is it the same sort of proposition as the Lott, where 458 Win dies can be make to work? Or do you need custom Ackley dies? Anything else about this chambering to make it worth consideration? Todd

Todd Getzen, My RCBS reloading dies in .458 Win Mag work great to load my .450 Ackley. I prefer the .450 Ackley because you don't need to cut a .375 H&H like the Lott.

The 450 Ackley has a slight shoulder and nearly straight case, so if you use the win mag dies spaced back as I have for the lot, you'll be doing alot of working of the brass. Personally I'm a fan of the Lott and Watts, as they achive all I think is practicle with the H&H case, and they can use the 458 win mag with no loss of performance in a pinch. The lott is also a factory round, with factory dies available. The Ackley may have a 50 fps advantage over the lott, but if the lott isn't a big enough case, then the answer is a 460 G&A or a 450 Rigby IMHO.

Todd, In a multi item swap i did with Mark Pinkston of Kailua custon Guns, I gave him a set of 450 ackley dies I had. If he didnt have plans for them, you might get them off from him.

My chief interest in this topic lies in the fact that my gunsmith has an Ackley reamer, but no Lott reamer. It is, I think, time that he acquires one, and I may help him to that end by buying it for him in exchange for a chambering job. I have since seen a pic of an Ackley, and though it looks interesting, I have no desire to own a wildcat that duplicates a commercial round (without any distinguishing characteristics like the Taylor). Thanks for the replies, Todd
