O.K., Here's what I have, and where I want to go...looking for suggestions/help. I have a Win M70 Classic SS .375 H&H I want to use this to build a .416 RM I would like barrel suggestions/recomendations, what twist rate? What is the contour size number of the M70 SS .375? I want to keep bbl contour the same, for the extra weight, recoil management, and for the ability to use the stock I have. I am thinking of finishing this out to a 23" bbl? yay? nay? any help is appreciated | ||

First of all, I happen to own a Mod 70 375 Stainless and a mod 70 416 Rem Blued. The 375 stainless guns have a heavier contour than the 375 blued guns. In fact I just took some measurements as to the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle of my blued 416 and my stainless 375 and they both measured .705 so winchester is using the same contour for the 416 blued guns so you are probably good to go, with the same size barrel. Some folks here are suggesting 1 in 12 twist for 400 gr bullets. The industry std appears to be 1 in 14. EZ | |||

I just finished one up with a pre 64 Win 70 H&H action, and used a 22" Douglas Premium stainless, #5 taper with 1:12 twist. Either twist will work, 1:12 or 1:14. It handles nice but you know it when you pull the trigger! PA Bear Hunter, NRA Benefactor | |||

thanks gentlemen.... eezridr can you post the chamber dimensions as well? did the entire bbl mic the same or tapperred? airgun1 do you know how a #5 bbl contour measures up to the factory contours? and good to see a fellow pa guy here, i do alot of hunting just outside of Galeton | |||

Winchester never made a stainless 416 remington mag so I'm almost sure they wouldn't rebarrel to one. The winchester .375 H&H contour is roughly a #5 douglas, not exact but close. Any barrel maker should be able to duplicate the factory barrel contour if that's what you want. Not a whole lot of barrel makers make stainless 416 barrels. Of the ones that do I'd choose Lilja. I have a M70 stainless .375 H&H with a lilja barrel in the factory contour so I know Lilja will duplicate the factory contour, I had it done. It shoots bug holes. | |||

I can't say about the SC 416 M70s, but I know that the previous 416 M70s would drop into a 375 stock, to include the stainless 375 synthetic stock. Both shared the same profile. | |||

91xit, Pulled out both guns again this morning and the profiles are NOT the same. The 375 Stainless has about a 1/2" longer chamber section than the 416 blued gun. EZ

I live in Galeton. I.T.D. Custom gun can duplicate your contour for you. A Douglas #5 is similar weight to factory pre 64 375 H&H. The shank is a little different. Mine are both put togethers using standard weight stocks; I wouldn't have rebarreled to 375 if I already had a factory one. Itd did my 375 H&H on a pre 64 and I used a Douglas barrel from ITD for the 416 Rem. itdcustomgun.com

I thought about buying one of the Mod 70 staineless / walnut 416's. I only ever saw one of them and the guy wanted $2,500.00 which was about $1,600.00 higher than the blued version so I passed! I have also seen a Mod 70 Stainless 458 Lott in a FG stock that was produced by the custom shop. It was waaaay to light for the caliber. | |||

Sorry, I didn't know they'd ever made them. I was wrong, my apologies. Not the first time I've been wrong, probably won't be the last. I'd still put a Lilja or other custom barrel on there before I'd send it back for a factory tube. | |||

Winchester only made 100 of the 416 Stainless / Walnut from their custom shop back in 2001/02 not sure. Bought it in Dallas at the Dallas Arms Collectors Society gunshow. My grief is the wood and metal is so beautiful, I am afraid to take in the field and mess it up. I have used it once for a bison hunt, which turned out perfect. Outfitter picked up my brass from the ground and said "Damn, I have never seen a bison go down like that!". Prayer, planning, preperation, perseverence, proper procedure, and positive attitude, positively prevents poor performance. | |||

I don't have a really good photo of my Win M70 416 Rem, but here it is compared to one of my 416 B&Ms.  The Custom Shop did a good job on all these rifles. Thanks for the numbers on them Joe, was not sure how many they made of them. Along about the same time they made a run of 358 STA, same configuration, stainless/wood, those were excellent rifles too. I have one of those SS Winchester 416's as well, Seems I heard or read somewhere they were offered through the custom shop only?? Anyway, I had a 22" shilen screwed on and using 370 gr Northforks took 14 plains critters in RSA. Going by memory it was getting real close to 2500 fps with 78-79 gr RL15 and plenty accurate. Apparantly your wanting a drop in so you should probably have the barrel traced to the original barrel specs, easy enough to do and inletting should be fine..as to feed and function you may not need any modification as sometimes you get lucky, other times it may need just a little tweeking and on ocassion some rail work and perhaps some widen of the rear of the box. I use only Walther Lothar barrells but they are very expensive. If your on the cheap then a good Douglas barrel seems to work 99% of the time. Easiest drop in would be to order a Lilja "win375" contour in 416. The stainless 375 used a different contour than the blue 375s, 416s and 458s. #5 Shilen (or whoever) will require some material removal from your stocks barrel channel. All the major barrel makers can duplicate your barrels' contour. Some may need your old barrel, some have it already programmed into their equipment. I have a 416 Rem built on a stainless Winchester 70 with a "win375" profile barrel and really like it. "There always seems to be a big market for making the clear, complex." | |||

You could send your gun to Classic barrel and gun works, (Dan Pedersen) in Prescott Arizona. He can make you a barrel in 416 that would exactly match your barrel in 375. He does rebores as well, but I've read that Win's SS barrels don't rebore very well, so most won't even attempt it. Dan's barrel's are cut rifled and said to be very accurate. I just bought one for a 416 rigby project, but I have no first hand experience as of yet. Matt FISH!!
