Having developed age related Vitreous Shrinkage and subsequent separation in my right eye, My OD, who is not a shooter, could not tell me if shooting my big bores would cause problems. The separation has caused floaters which he says will become less noticable with time.

Anyone on this forum have any experience with this? I have read the posts on detached retina, but this is a different situation.

JBoutfishn,
Your optometrist is not an M.D. or D.O. trained in ophthalmology, eh? The fact that he is also not a shooter may be relevant to his understanding too.

Some ophthalmologists become subspecialists in vitreoretinal surgery. You need to find one to examine your eyes most thoroughly.

If the vitreous separation is a recent thing, proceed with great caution. Make sure both retinas are checked thoroughly as possible for any tears that might lead to retinal detachment later.

Vitreous floaters are a common and usually benign thing that we all get with age, and more so in the myopic with long visual axis eyeballs. A sudden increase in number or a shower of floaters is not a good sign and needs thorough examination, likewise any scintillating scotoma, or flashing lights or blind spots!

It will be tough to get a hard recommendation from anyone on what you can and cannot do. That is up to you. Nutritional supplements such as Ocuvite are harmless and might be good for all of us to take.

DaggRon, thanks for the reply. The moment I noticed a problem, I went to the OD who has been looking after me for years. He did the dialation thing, and spent much time looking for any tears. He said there was a small amount of bleeding where the viscous pulled loose, but that the retina was not torn. BUT.... I get the message, will find an Opthamologist for 2nd opinion. [Wink]

My brother in law has suffered from this for a very years due to diabeties,he was told to stop shooting the big bores, that have snappy recoil so has gone to black powder rounds i.e. 38-55/ 40-65, in the older 86's, and all the small bore he wants. he now loves the 22mag and the 17hmr

DaggaRon:
I cannot thank you enough! Went to the DO, re-examined, found a tear, did the lazer thing. Will be a couch potato for a week, recheck. Hopefully, back to the big bores.

Hope this saves another member from making what could have been a very bad mistake.
