Hey everybody,

does anybody have any pictures of 30's era 505 gibbs? I want to look at what they looked like built on the rifles of back then, I did a search on here but am having trouble finding any pics. If you can't post them you could e-mail them to me, I appreciate it.

(I bet Alf has a couple)

I knew that you were the man Alf! I really appreciate it. The reason that I asked was that I saw some pictures of an original mauser magnum action being setup for the 505 Gibbs, had some great work done to it. I was curious about using a cz550 for doing one. I heard though that they don't look the same when done, so wanted to see what the british 505 gibbs looked like. After this I will ask for some pics of newer ones on a cz hopefully so I can compare. I don't get to handle enough of these nice guns to have the images ingrained in my grey matter.

Alf, by the way, have you ever thought about having somebody come over and clean all your guns for you? Or periodically fondle them for you? I will submit and application for the position. And the amount of $$ per hour I would have to pay.

Dago, huntingcat is pretty close to finishing my CZ 505 conversion and I'll post a progress picture soon. The work so far has consisted of opening the rear of the ejection port a little (which has to done at an angle across the rear bridge if you want to keep the recess for the scope ring to engage). Opeened and recessed the boly face as per Jim Wisner's recommendation instead of grinding the extractor to fit. Also ground the "billboard" as someone called it off the side, re-contoured the briges and some other lines to more closely mimic the Mauser and now I'm waiting for Wisner to finish his M-70 style safeties. Then polish-polish-polish.
I got real lucky and the thing feeds 505s fine with the original 416 Rigby magazine box and spring. No changes to the rails at all! Don't know how that happened but I'll take it!
Bottom line, though it sounds like you can buy one off the shelf from CZ next year and save all that money.

Here is the CZ 550 after machining but before any hand work. You can get a pretty good idea of what to expect for a limited budget. I presume that if money were no object a CZ wouldn't be considered.

P.S. Jeffe; this is your action. The photos don't really do it any justice. It looks way better in the flesh.

Still looks like a CZ550 to me. Albeit a ground up one.

Yep. That's the point. If you want a Mauser go buy one.

It's also the price paid for keeping the factory scope mount system. Most of the changes are pretty subtle line changes that will be more important once everything is blended.

"I presume that if money were no object a CZ wouldn't be considered."

The various CZ actions look as nice and are as strong as any once they are cleaned up. Rigby used ZKKs for the 416 for awhile.

I don't disagree other than the cost of "cleaning them up" properly puts them in the price range of some actions that are ready to go.

Did you notice the proof pressure marking of 3800 bar. Do you know what that translate to in psi? I'll help you out, 55,114 psi. Not a proof load for a high pressure super strong action, if you ask me!

Actualy, the CZ is better than the Mauser since it doesn't suffer from a split lug, and old soft steel. There is a REALLY good reason the British kept their big cartridge pressure below 48,000 psi, with most below 42,000 psi!

I think the only external features (mostly cosmetic) items the CZ is missing are the Mauser bolt shroud and the bolt release lever.

Yeah, I miss the bolt release. It will always be my worst appearance issue with this gun. The bolt shroud problem should improve with the new safety. BTW, do you always talk to the rest of the world like they're stupid? Must get kinda lonely.

I recall a Rifles Magazine photo of a custom .505 using a ZKK-602 as the starting point, I think this was four or five years ago. That was a very fine looking rifle my friends, very fine looking indeed.

Excellent guys. I am enjoying very much. All pics are welcome, and when I said original I probably should have been more clear, not necessarily produced during that pre-war period, but anything on the pre-war magnum mausers. Weren't they done with a round top and knurling on them?

Can you post a pic with the bolt stop showing a bit better? I have only seen the CZ in person a couple of times and it has been a long time since then.

Thanks again!

My receiver is stripped and I can't post it but its a little push button thingy right behind the rear bridge in a line with the left rail instead of the side-mounted swing lever. Almost like a Model 70. When this project started I intended to grind both rings to an M98 profile and put an original flag safety on it. (I had no intention of scoping it) Unfortunately the cocking piece is completely different as are the threads on the firing pin and the whole assembly ends up being a one-off custom job. I settled for the next best (or first best, depending on who you ask) thing and will put a Wisner 3 position saffety on it. I'll post some more when I get to the next level.

Thanks very much. I love pictures, they always get my brain spinning. Sadly the brain moves much faster than the income. :-)

Persistance sometimes works as well as money. I picked up the 505 barrel on eBay. Integral rib, barrel band and NEGC Masterpeice front sight for under $300.00. You gotta hunt this stuff, just like any other good trophy!

Alf,

You are very fortunate indeed for being able to find (and afford) an original 500 Jeffery. Thanks for the photos.

Alf,

I'm sure you saw the article in Magnum (maybe you wrote it?) about the Mauser actions where it mentioned the short intermediate action. Quite common compared to the Jeffery's!
