I reckon this is actually two questions

1: do you deer hunt with a double
and
2: do you deer hunt with a BIG bore...

1: Other than 12 ga doubles, I have yet to take a double to the field, and missed a chance to do so this past weekend with my 58 cal BP kodiak double
I can see NO reason not to, unless the shots are very long and the rifle is unscope.

2: as for big bores, once you are fully accustomed to them, the little ones all look, well, LITTLE. While not the stopper load that even the 500gr is, the 458 win mag, with 405's at 2400 fps in a light rifle (8.25) feels like a 22, okay, a 308, once you get used to it.

Big bullets, 2000-2400 FPS just flat out FLATTEN game (even if the 405 rem is the BT of .458 bullets) from any angle, and with any DECENT shot.

Jeffe's theory of the "near hit" rather than common wisdom of the near miss... were you have aimed for just behind the shoulder, traversing the chest and exiting the brisket becomes 3" back and 15 degrees less angle (fly bit the deer, right?)...

in a 270, that's a FREAKIN mess to follow up and clean up on.

with your 470, boom~... ~20 steps... pile of deer.

Besides, you bought your 470 to hunt with!!!!

I took this guy with the .375 H&H in season 2002. I like it so much I probably won't go back to useing the .300.

I'm thinking about taking my .470 deer hunting some time during this season. I hunt 5-6 days a week, but almost always take a .270 along for the ride since longer shots are frequently a possibility. But sometime in the next couple of months I'd like to see what happens when I shoot a whitetail with a 500 grain bullet. I need to shoot about 20 does before the season ends, so the .470 may get its chance later on. Who here has already tried this? Any suggestions??

Vic,

That might not be a bad choice for south Georgia deer hunting. LINK

Maybe you need to come over for a hunt.

I kinda sorta have. I used my 20 gauge over-under shotgun a few weeks ago to take a buck with the bottom barrel and the top barrel to take a doe about 10 seconds later. It was my first double with my grouse gun. Federal slugs were the ammo. I liked having the quick follow-up shot and quick reloading.
