Good on you Joe, great parents...mine is an especially accurate rifle and I've taken buffalo with 400 grain Swift A Frames and elephant with 400 grain Barnes Banded solids. It is also capable of 300 yard shots on plains game with a bit of practice. I shoot mine with cast bullets for practice. What scope do you have in mind? Here is a good suggestion: Conquest Duralyt
Good luck,
Paul

The .416 Rigby is a very reliable round.....read John Taylors write up about it in African Rifles and Cartridges written in 1948.I have learnt to keep it simple,400 Grain Barnes Banded Solids for Elephant's,....1 shot is all that is usually required,as for Buffalo 410 Grain Woodleigh Soft Points are to me the best and safest for African Buffalo.Trust me when I tell you that you dont want the drama of the 1st shot placed wrongly by a bullet with an "Ogive" that has a propensity to deviate, and I count Barnes X and Swift A-Frame in that group.Hone your Rifle to 1/2 minute angle accuracy with those 2 bullets handloaded and you will be very content.Dont get me wrong, but after loosing a 60+ inch Kudu by the Bubye River in the Lowveld to a Swift A-frame which lost its straight line flight from a 40 yard shot when it hit a twig,I have learnt to carry just those 2 bullets in my 2 .416 Rigby Rifles.....Buffalo need just 1 shot in the area just above the heart from a Woodleigh 410 grain soft point.Elephant shot with the Barnes Banded Solid need just 1 shot from my experience,I hunt a lot without a PH and I think I have stayed out of being read about by sticking to these 2 Bullets in my .416 Rigby Rifles. Speedwise 2400 fps stabilises the Barnes Banded Solid quickly .....best of Luck Chap. You have the Best Rifle Caliber for Africa.

That,s one heck of a Christmas present! Alaska Arms makes good quick detach rings for CZs, might not be a bad idea to drop him a line, see if he,s got any rings for the Rugers made up...

Joe,I use a 3 x 9 Swarovski scope on my .416 and it has served me well from taking a man eating 16 ft Croc at 175 yards,a huge hippo from 90 yards side on,I put succesive shots into less than 1 inch at 100 yards with that scope.Your 3 x 9 is a sensible choice.I hope you handload.

Joe

Enjoy it, as I could do with one or two RSM actions right now.

Have a friend who is an apprentice PH in Zimbabwe, has feeding problems with the same rifle, nearly killed on an elephant charge. Ruger does not seem interested in the feeding problems. Check that the rifle feeds properly. It is a great rifle if it feeds properly. A competent gunmaker should be able to sort you out here in the USA. The problem is there are virtually zero gunmakers in Zimbabwe especially for a young appie PH who makes virtually nothing.

You have great parents to say the least. Where are you going for your buffalo?

Great Christmas present for sure! The feeding issues are real. I had this same problem but was resolved by Ruger at no charge. Love the .416 Rigby and have taken elephant and buffalo with the cartridge. Congrats and can't wait to see pictures.

I bought one of the first batches of Ruger 416 Rigby and had quite a bit of work done on it to make it useful in the dangerous game situation. The for end sling attachment was removed and a barrel band added. Made a new front sight, had a new quarter rib machined with a better rear site and Talley bases, Had some trigger work done, also had the feeding ramps polished. I had a little extra metal put on the safety lever. I also lengthened the bold handle so it could be easily grabbed. Probably other changes as well but since then the rifle had performed well in all my trips to Africa. It is worth cleaning up the feeding. Good luck and enjoy

That is great news, it may well have been the type of cartridge she was using. The rifle was in perfect condition. Where did you go for your Musk Ox?

Where are you going in Zambia and with whom. Zambia is great especially in the Valley, have been there a few times and managed great buffalo every time. We were with Vidale Safaries and had a fantastic time to say the least. The just sacked the head of ZAMBIA Wildlife for corruption on assigning the new concessions and the President has cancelled all of the leases issued so everyone is back to square 1. No one knows where they are going to be this season. The article on that situation from the Zambian Daily Mirror was sent to us by Fico Vidale of Vidale Safaries. Check carefully about your concession and make certain there is a plan and a back-up plan. If you do not belong, you should subscribe to the Hunting Report for the latest information on that situation. Go Well
