Glock i shot a ~8.5# 458 today.. it was a pussy cat, with factory (obviously not my gun) 510 sp. The recoil calc aint what you might think it is. Are you doing a 300 gr, at 1600 in a pistol and comparing it to a 510 at 2000 in a rifle? The experience, to me, is FAR more pleasant in a rifle. 500 grains at 2000fps is easy to master. I was shooting a 9.5# rigby right next to it, and it was substaintialy more recoil, with a 400 at 2400. jeffe

I was comparing the 260gr Partition Gold vs. 500gr FMJs. According to the calc, it looks like it'll be a pussycat. The 454 is a handfull in a handgun (at least in the Ruger Super Redhawk, which has zero muzzle flip), but would be nothing in a rifle. Since the .458 Lott will fire .458 Win. Mag's too, I probably will get it rechambered shortly after I get the rifle. Two-for-one! Cool! Can't wait to get one, and see how big of a tree I can put a hole through The T-Rex, now that's gonna kick I'll stick with the standard stock up until I get it rechambered, then I'll switch it for a better one...

Just to double check, the .458 Lott will chamber/fire a .458 Win Mag right?

Others are better qualified to answer this, but I believe firing a lot of .458 Win Mags in a .458 Lott may lead to chamber throat erosion. Regards, Terry

Sweet! I do agree that chamber thoat errosion would seem likely, though. Shouldn't be to bad, unless the loads are really hot (?), but hey, what do I know... Thanks everyone!

Umm, wait a minute here (from the Accurate reloading pages): .458 Win Mag: 500gr, 2178 fps .458 Lott: 500gr, 2235 fps. Ok, what am I missing here? Why rechamber for 57 fps!?! Whats the point of the Lott round? Or are there hotter loads that I just dont know about? I had heard something about 500gr/2400fps?

If you're getting the same / similar velocity from a bigger case pressures are probably lower (although not always true, depending on where you are on the curve of dimishing returns in velocity for additional powder burned). That is probably one of the points of the Lott for Africa, although 'more power' gets more play. Todd

glock20rocks, Don't forget to take the barrel length difference into account. The 458WinMag had a 25" barrel, and the 458Lott had a 22.5" barrel. Of course the difference between various rifles of identical nominal chambering and barrel length can be easily greater than +/- 100 fps: a "slow" rifle or a "fast" rifle, for whatever chamber/throat/bore reasons. I consider the 458 Lott to offer about 150 fps more than the 458 WinMag, loaded to the same pressures in the same barrel length. So, a good safe 2250 fps in a 24" barreled 458 Lott is not hard to achieve, IMHO. Part of the charm of the Lott is just being able to get over 2150 fps with 500 grain bullets at lower pressures than the 458 WinMag, which would be red-lining it to get there, in most rifles.
