Alf- Make a cerrosafe chamber cast of each rifle . Send them as well as a pair of fired cases to CH4D and they will make you a set of dies for about $300 US. Redding and RCBS will also make custom dies but the cost is 2-4 times that of CH4D. If all else fails or the timelines are too long I could undoubtably make a set for you. My own experience has been excellent with CH4D and I've had about 10 custom dies made by them to my own drawings. Talk to Dave directly and I'm sure he can help you out. Don't under any circumstances modify the chamber. -Rob-Rob

You might also check with SIG Arms, see what they're using for their 500's:

I was basing my comment on the fact that when I asked them about dies for 416 wildcats they told me they no did custom dies.

That web page you have illustrated...I am wondering if that is referring to dies they have already made and that are listed?

To be clear,I think there are more varients of the 500 Jeff out there than any of us understand. A whole lot of people made 500 Jeffs some with full size rims and some rebated. I've seen a few and many would not feed reliably. This cartridge invented the porpoise jam where the bolt overrides the rim. That and all the varients around caused me to go with a 500 AHR which corrected most but not all the feeding problems. I actually have devised a mag mod which eliminates the porpoise in the AHR version and will make it available to anyone who asks for it.-Rob

Mike,
RCBS certainyl does make custom dies, as I have spoken with them int eh matter no more than 4 weeks ago. In fact, this is a critical line of business to them, and is listed on their website

jeffe,

When I called RCBS in 2003 about getting a custom die for a 375x2.5" Flanged NE H&H double that has a very tight chamber (just in case their regular die in this caliber did not work, since I had already bought a CH set that was too large) I was transferred to the department that you referred to. I was told that they no longer offered custom dies other than their regular special order dies, and that they would not be able to help if these dies were too large. Hopefully they have changed this policy, but can you confirm that you asked about a custom dimensioned die, and not a special order die?

Thanks,
Jim

You have touched on the biggest problem there is for the 500 Jeff. After 70 years, CIP finally got around to making standard dimensions on 2-15-00. The included shoulder angle is: 25 degrees, 13 minutes and 42 seconds. ANYTHING else is not standard. I have brought this to the attention of RCBS, Clymer, Manson, JGS, etc. 4-d makes the proper dies and I believe RCBS has just started doing so. This lack of concrete standards is what gave gunsmiths fits on other grand cartridges such as 416 Rigby. Fortunately, that problem has been taken care of also. I have copies of he CIP drawings for anyone needing them. Seeya Duane

Mike375- How can you befoul a thread such as this on the elegant and esoteric topic of 500 Jefferies with dribble about Weatherby's. The smell of cheap perfume somehow goes with the Weatherby image. Like ALF I have cleaned up my act act would never allow one to contaminate the aura of my gun room! Bah! Would you like to know what I really think of Weatherby's?-Rob

Now if Weatherby only could chamber their premier grade .460 in .50 Beowulf with a two round mag, my dream would come true!-Rob
