Which Recoil Pad for 416 Rem Login/Join

I'm having a Winchester M70 in 416 Remington restocked and tweaked by Canyon Creek Custom Gunstocks. The biggest caliber I've shot is a 375 H&H in my Blaser R93 and I can handle the recoil just fine but I'm a bit concerned about the recoil of the 416 Rem. I have the opportunity to specify which recoil pad will be put on the rifle so I wanted to get some recommendations.
Thanks,
Bill

I've used Limbsaver (.458Lott) and Pachmayer (500 NE) with good results. My .416Rem Mdl. 70 has the OE pad and has not been a problem.

I had a Pachmyer 325 ventilated pad on mine in the past, but have switched it to a Pachmyer Decelerator.

A Pachmayr Decelerator should do.

I have a Ruger #1 in 458 Lott that was brutal with the stock pad, I had a Limbsaver installed and had it shortened 1/2". Much better now.

I replaced the hard factory pad on my Ruger RSM in 416 Rigby with a Limbsaver pad. Much better than the original.

Another vote for the Decelerator, I find the Limbsavers to tear and chip too easily.

I like Limbsaver's but like Andy...I find they are not durable.

If you can handle the recoil of the 375 just fine, the 416 will be no problem.

Like Lane and others, I have found the Limbsaver is a bit more "comfy" but the Decelerator more durable.

If it is going to see a lot of target and range work and less field work, I'd go witht eh Limbsaver.

If on the other hand, you're going to drag it through hell and high water more than a "bench queen" I'd go with the Decelerator. The difference between the comfort zone of the two is small enough that you won't be able to tell the difference unless trying them side by side.

I also prefer the Pachmayr Decelerator, in the Old English model. One of these in 0.80" or 1" thickness ought to be just right for your .416.

Plus they are a good looking pad, and come in black and red, which I like best. (They also come in brown and even green, which I don't like so much!)

Decelerator Old English

I have found that the decelerator pads offer a good combination of comfort and durability.

bgomez,
A Blaser R93 is a light rifle, considerably lighter than an M70 equipped with scope, ammo, rings and bases. If anything, you may find the M70 416 more tolerable than the Blaser from a recoil perspective.

Thanks for all the replies; this helps a lot.
EDMHUNTER: I will certainly post pics!
Biebs: I was hoping that would be the case since the Blaser weighs 6.83 lbs and the Winchester weighs 9 lbs; both without scopes.
Thanks,
Bill

I have had 6 416 Rem mags.My lightest is my BIG Game Rifle model 700 .It is about 8.5 pounds with a scope in a HS stock.I use two past pads when I shoot it.I shoot standing up off of a milk crate on top of the bench with a 60 pound bull bag on top.I have shot it with reduced loads up to 150 times in a day.The reduced load is 76 grains of reloader 15 with a fed 215 primer and a speer 350 gr mag tip bullet.I can shoot this load all day.It is about 2400 fps out of my 24" Win model 70.I use one past pad when I am hunting. They dont make them any more but i have cane caps on all my 416s .They help on your cheek.I have put new shoe insoles so I dont get wacked in the cheek so hard.I love shooting my 416s .Its just getting harder to afford to shoot them as much as I use to.

Ok! I got my rifle back from Canyon Creek Custom Gunstocks and I am very happy with how it turned out. Some of you helped me decide on some options and requested some pictures when it was all finished. It started life as a Winchester M70 416 Rem Safari Express. I had a bastogne walnut stock put on it with the checkering pattern I picked, rosewood grip cap and forend cap, pachmayer decelerator pad, inletted sling swivel stud, jeweled bolt and extractor, engraved bolt knob, squared and trued action and some trigger work. I will be using it in Zambia in July hopefully on Cape Buffalo, Hippo and Croc. I'm taking my Blaser R93 in 338 win mag for leopard and plains game.

Very nice looking furniture!

BTW, I can't believe some of the POS recoil pads being put on big bore rifles as OE. Ruger is one of the worst and Sabatti is just as bad. Remington was having their name put on Limbsaver pads, which is quality. I have no idea what Winchester is now using. Browning OE pads always seemed good enough.

Remington said Limbsavers were too expensive so
have now dumped them and gone with a cheap pad.

Ruger pads are shocking.

Looks great! Could you post some more pictures? Is that the all weather finish?

Thanks for all the kind replies!

EDMHUNTER, yes, it's the all weather finish.

Sure, I can take more pictures, what view or angle in particular do you want to see?

Question:
Is it normal on a rifle/scope combination like this to be able to see the front sight when the scope is on low power settings? I took the front hood off and it seems to help but not completely eliminate the obstruction.

Thanks,
Bill

Front sights are usually visible below 4X; that is perfectly normal.

Yes, it is normal on lower power settings.

If you have a hood, like you did you need to take it off and the blade isn't a problem as you tend to get used to it and not see it anymore, especially when hunting.

Attached are the targets that were used to sight-in the rifle by Canyon Creek Custom Gunstocks. Do you think I should try to find solids that will shoot closer to the same point of impact as the TBBC's or just go with it since the follow up shot will most likely not be as precise? The third shot in both groups is the one that is about an inch away. The two touching are the first two shots.
Thanks,
Bill

BGOMEZ,

I had to wipe a big puddle of drool off the floor, boy that is one beautiful piece of timber!

I could see the front sight on my Blaser when the scope was wound down to 2.5 on my Bushnell Elite, but It certainly wasn't an issue.

Cheers,

Michael.
