What kind of performance would you expect from one if built up on this case? My son has a Win Classic Compact in 308win, in the future it would be a nice round to have in a switch barrel setup along with a 300WSM in another barrel too. I got him the CRF Classic Compact because I had something like this in mind.

Thanks

Brent,

The case is a little smaller than the 338 Winchester so I would guess a bit less than the 416 Taylor. Perhaps 2300 f/s tops with the 400 grain bullet.

I was thinking 2000-2100 with a 400, which would be fine to start him out with. I'll have to look at the 7WSM case, never knew it was longer.

If I was going to build a .416 WSM, which would be a lot of fun, I think I'd experiment with different bullets, but maybe stick with the 300 or 325 gr. Barnes X-bullets. I have seen what they do to plains game out of a .416 Rigby, and I think they would be dandy on bear or moose as well.

It would probably do fine with the heavier bullets as well.

Thanks Joel, I figured the 400gr comparison was just easier to make. The 300gr X is the bullet he'll get started on. I shoot the 350X and 400gr XLC out of my Ruger 416wby and he don't need them at first. He'll have enough fun with the 300's [Big Grin] [Big Grin] . He's 14 in may, and needs a couple years yet to be ready, once he can drive tacks with the 300WM we'll discuss it seriously. It's sounding like a good round for this rifle though. Appreciate all the input from everyone. I would think that it could fit the bill for several people with the short actions. If offered by Winchester sometime, all the better.

It'll work on anything this side of Jurrasic Park...A 400 gr. 416 bullet at 2000 to 2300 is about all any old buffalo can take...My 450-400-3" is a 423 bullet at 2100 ( no difference ) and it has served me well, I would shoot elephant or anything else with it and feel more than well armed.....

I a have .416 Heavy Express Short Action Magnum. It is basically identical to a WSM case necked up to .416. My Ruger conversion has a 22" barrel and I get 10 to 12 reloads from cases with 60 grains of AA2520 producing 2150 fps with 400 grain Hornady's, both solids and softs.

Recoil is less bothersome than my Weatherby .300 and accuracy is outstanding. I don't think a lion or buffalo would like a double lung shot, much. I've tried 350 grain X-bullets and get 2075 fps with a lighter load and believe that I could get 150 more fps out of the rifle if i wished, but this light load shoots to the Hornady bullet's point of aim.
I'll bet that Montana Rifleman can do the work for you and probably has already made a .416 WSM or two. www.montanarifleman.com

Anyone have an idea of expected pressure in the velocity range of 2100 to 2300? I wonder if it might be a limiting factor like the 416 Taylor (which in my opinion is not that limiting, ableit much higher than the Rigby).

Edited:
Nevermind, just saw the figure in Jeffe's post.

It sounds like it will be a great little/big cartridge for him. I had wondered if it could break 2000fps with the 400, sounds like it will so it'll be worth it. I'll tell him Ray said he'll have a fine Elephant rifle, his eyes'll light right up. SmilerThanks guys.

John Lazzeroni does a .416 based on his short-Patriot (.308) necked up to .416...he calls it the Maverick and his web-site shows, I believe, 2400 fps with a 400gr bullet and 24" barrel.

The Lazzeroni cases have about the same interior capacity as the WSM case but the cases are much heavier as John loads them to 65K. I would probably drop back a bit but I think you could easily get 2250-2300 fps without stretching things. I've been tempted to build one on the Savage that Lazzeroni sells in the Patriot by having it rebarreled but I've got enough projects in the fire.

Take a look at his web-site at www.lazzeroni.com
