I was wanting a low power cast bullet load for "plinking" and porcupines next spring and was going to get a RCBS bullet mould for the .417cal 350gr FN/GC bullet. I read that you can duplicate a Black Powder load by using 60% of IMR 4198 (and filler) of the original load of black. This is the problem, the 416 Taylor as we know isn't a black powder round so how much would I use? OR, if anyone has a cast bullet load that works well I would like to hear it.

NB Hunter.. I can give you a guide to go on but procede at your own risk. The Lyman cast bullet shows a starting load with 53 grains of IMR 4198 with a 385 gr cast bullet, vel.2010fps. Max load is 57gr. for a velocity of 2125fps.This is in a 458 WIN MAG. So allowing for the smaller bore, but similar case capacity of the 416 taylor I would start with 48gr. of 4198 and your 350gr. bullet.

Get yourself a can of Accurate XMP-5744. It is designed for just this type of use, reduced loads in large cases,no filler. I use 37.5 grs with an NEI 375gr RNGC in my 416 rem mag. It goes about 1700 FPS and goes into a cloverleaf at 50 yards. Easy on the gun, shooter and ears but gives you the chance to shoot more and get real familiar with your big bore.
