So I've settled on the 350gr Woodiegh PP with 67.0 gr of RL15 for my softs giving just over 2400fps out of my M70 375H&H. Now I'm ready to load a batch of the 350gr Woodliegh solids. Is it necessary to reduce the powder charge by 1/2 gr or so when loading the solids or is this just something that relates to doulbles?

You should reduce it by one grain, likely, and try to get the velocities and POI's of the loads close together.

The solid will likely be longer and harder to engrave, so pressures could be higher from encroachment on the case capacity, and greater friction in the barrel. Higher pressures may result in higher velocities.

Let your chronograph and your POI be the guides. It is not just for double rifles.

I have not tried your bullets, but in a .458 Lott the old-style Hornady steel FMJ 500-grain solid would give 2240 fps and the RNSP would give 2200 fps with the same powder charge, and a 1 grain difference (RL-15) between the two got them close enough for me.

I would reduce it a bit more than 1/2 gr. The reason is that the solid has a steel jacket and will have more friction in the bore. Through testing and chrono'ing, you may end up with the same load for both, but to be on the safe side I would err to the side of caution. Your rifle may also require a differant load to shoot to the same point of aim also.

I'm working on the same loads right now. I've got the solids in hand and waiting for Midway to get a shipment of the RN's. Let me know how this all works out. I'm hoping for that 2400 mark as well, maybe just a touch over.

The softs did very well at 2409 ave and sd of 4 at about 1 moa. This out of my M70 with 25 inch barrel.
I need to get more brass to load the solids but should have that load finalized in 2 weeks.

One grain of powder either way isn't going to make any noticeable difference. You would have to be right on the pressure red line for it to make any difference. Talk about splitting hairs!

It is traditional to reduce by one grain for a solid, and that is widely accepted, Why I have no idea it really makes no difference unless perhaps you are deep into max.

I normally don't load big bores at max, so I use the same load for softs and solids..I did some testing on this and decided that it was just another BS old morey or tradition...


Rather you should concentrate on whatever puts that solid into the same POI as your soft, up or down in your load developement, and back off from max a grain or two for hunting loads, big bores kill by penetration and 50 or 100 FPS normally makes no difference in the real world......

Shot the 350gr Woodliegh solids today. Worked up to 67 gr of RL15 which gave 2375 ave.(25fps slower than softs gave) with good accuracy, same POI as softs. I'm ready for the Selous!
