Welcom to the Big Bore side of AR........The 500 A-Square is one of my favorite cartridges...I had the first one in Alaska I think..The A-Square manual shows loads for the 600 gr bullet only but there was a 707 gr bullet that it shot as well..for the 600 gr bullet..........................................H-4895 106 -115 grains powder 2474 fps max velocity 26" barrel...............................IMR 4064112-117 gr 2503 fps max vel. 26" barrel............................................RL 12 113-118 gr..max vel 2481 fps 26" barrel.............................................................................................My starting load was 108 gr of IMR 4320 w/ 600 gr bullet for 2200 fps from my rifles 21 " barrel .. The old max load with 4320 was hotter than what the book shows . But about 113 would probley be book max ......for about 2400 fps.. For plinking I used to load a 450 gr Barnes 50/110 bullet w/ 114 gr IMR 4064... It chronographed at 2425 fps from my rifle........I think you can contact the A-Square Co. via the www ... If I may ask ,, what are the particulars on your rifle .. Any pictures.........................................Obviously All load data given is refrence Only ....Your results may vary.........There was a big difference in recoil between the starting loads and max loads .........Check out 470 MBOGO,s videos posted by Canuk... And read his write up on that caliber also......I want to use a 500 gr HAWK spitzer soft point load in my next 500 A-Sq. rifle .. At 2700 fps it may pop a brown bears head clean off .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Hej John from another John (in Sweden) Even if you have the loads kindly posted by gumboot458, I can still highly recommend getting the book "Any shot you want" by A. Alphin (spelling?). I have the book, and it has good loads for all the big calibres, especially the A-Square calibres! A lot of other interesting reading too. You can order it from Amazon for $US33 plus about $US 9 shipping. http://www.amazon.com/Any-Shot-You-Want-Square/dp/09643...3949?ie=UTF8&s=books The worst-recoiling rifle I ever shot was a .378 Weatherby (I didn't like it much!), but looking at the ballistics, I think the .500 A^2 must be right up there! Cheers, John

I have a .500 A-Square and have used BeLL brass (now hard to find), and Barnes 570 grain and Woodleigh 600 grain bullets. For powders, I have used RL-15 and H4350SC. IMHO, these powders are ideal for the .500 A-Square. They fill the case, allow for some compression and deliver the highest velocities. I have always used Federal 215 primers. I agree that "Any Shot You Want" is an excellent book for big bore handloaders, and for owners of .500 A-Square rifles in particular. Just make sure that you back off the maximum loads listed by at least 10% for your starting loads. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.
