Well here is the 600 overkill so far. It has been slow but I am trying to do everything. From milling out my own follower to stock work. I have be watching videos on head spacing and should tackle that soon. I roughed out the front sight ramp and have started the sling band. I added the ebony tip. I want to mill my own 1/4 rib and recoil lug. The action feeds without the barrel so i think I am close on that. I have a muzzle break almost finished.

The enfield lost her ears, Its cock on open now and I have milled out a hinged mag cover for her. I think I will get 3 down in the box when done.

WOW, that's cool. Doing it all yourself? Man, I wish I was that talented. I have to pay people to do my gunsmithing.

I wont claim any talent until I shoot it and she doesnt blow my head off. I have been trying to do a bit more myself each rifle. This is the first I have installed the barrel on.
George mine will not be as nice as the ones you and Rob have! But if she works I will be happy.
I have to do things several times to get them right.
Next project I picked up an old Jeferry double shotgun that I want to make into a 303 british double rifle.
I guess I like doing things the hard way after all I drive/work on a 1950 harley.

When you get yours up and running, we should get together for a range session. We can't be more than a few hours apart. I live about a half hour south of Binghamton.

Thanks guys.
George I live 40 miles north of lake George right off exit 28 of I87. I am working on my trophy room should have it finished this fall. Hope to finish up a short range behind the house shortly. Any time anyone is in the area drop by Ill buy a drink for you.
We should try and find a place for an AR bigbore shoot. I have a kodiak double and a neat little sharps carbine that are fun to shoot. I think the 600 will be shooting end of the summer if work isnt too crazy.

Figured I've revive this old thread and get this year's big bore project rolling.

I have a P14 Ewing rebuilt Enfield sitting on the desk, ready to join the big league!

I've been eyeballing Ed's .585BHE as an option.

The .600OK is the another contender. Any other suggestions?

With that said, any advice on getting a barrel installed?

Send it to PacNor? How about AHR?

I see AHR sells brass and CH4D has dies for the .600OK.

Any other source of brass?

I'll be shooting mostly home grown cast slugs.

Thanks!!

Though delivery of my 600 OK is still a few days away, I have nothing but great things to say of Wayne (Bitterroot) and Ed of AHR. THey have been gentlemen, have kept their word as far as timeline (even did better than I expected), did great by me as far as price and I know of noone who has had any negative comments regarding the quality of their work. Who could ask for more than that? Prices for 600 OK dies and brass are about the same from other sources. My vote would be to speak with the folk at AHR and get your project off the ground.

Ed, any anticipation of when you'll have a 585 reamer to PacNor? Your offer is pretty tough to beat. My only worry is the potential bugs on a new cart but it sounds like you're doing the homework and getting everything squared away.

I'm little pressed for time as I'll be out in the sticks for the next four weeks and hope to send the action off before I go. That's four weeks I can gain on the wait time.

I spent the morning reading old .600OK threads and have it on the brain. The .600 has had time to work out the kinks and it doesn't get any badder than that, but... PacNor doesn't list the .600 and AHR might be more than my $500 budget for a barrel and installation (if they even work on Enfields?). I have a few professionally built rifles but this is meant as a cheap, do-it-yourself, try-and-see project.

Paul, thanks for the recommendation. I do like what I see coming from AHR. My long term goal is to noodle around with a few ultra big bores as cheap as possible and then have somebody like AHR put together something nice.

But for this Enfield, Ed's .585 is in the lead but anybody else have any ideas or options?

Thanks!

Tonto-You really need to try some of my 750gr bullets. They really work well in the .600OK and still have enough bc for anything tyhat walks this earth. If you need help on how to headspace and machine your baby give me a call. The big trick with enfields is cutting square threads. I guess you know that, but if you want to discuss it. I'm available.-rob

The reamers are supposed to be here before end of month, and Pacnor will get one right after that. Rich will use one, and others will use extras. I'll leave the one at Pacnor for a while, the others will be shuttled back to
me, then on to next guys. I have moderate,
perfect for hunting loads, a year and a half
of different testing. Ed

I've decided to send my action to PacNor on monday before I leave. They don't need a reamer to get a barrel started. Now for the choice of caliber.

Ed, you have a great option that PacNor will be able to offer at the end of the month.

Rob, what would I need to do if I chose the .600? Would I need to organize a reamer rental for PacNor? I can deal with the mag box etc when I get back. I'll be asking for help when the time comes.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

I've had it in an Enfield testing, soon to

577NE to Nyati to Trex and little more. Ed

My action is headed to PacNor on monday. I'm going to have them install a Varminter contour .585" barrel, chambered in the .585BHE when they get the reamer from you.

THANKS for all the developement and getting this po'man's .577 going !!!!

...... This may take some thinking .... I,ve got a CZ action......I should check to see if McGowan can do it on a 1 1/2" blank ....would give them plenty of steel for quarter rib , recoil lug sling eye , front sight base and muzzle brake ....

Ed , what twist do you recommend ? I would mostly shoot the 650 gr bullets @ 2350 or so .but would undoubtedly have some 750 gr solids in a pocket for a bear kegged up on the other side of a 6' spruce blowdown ..... Do you think a 21" barrel ,bolt face to crown will work ok ? That would give me 2 1/2" for the expansion chamber and brake and 1/2 " for a good strong muzzle ..

How fast would I have to drive the solid to get it thru a 6'diameter spruce log do you think ..

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

gumboot-- That braked combo would work,
1 to 16-20 rwist ok. Personally I'd
have couple more inches of barrel, soaks up recoil. If you get 750 gr solid out at
2400 it should get through a big spruce,
albeit slowed down coming out other side.Ed

........I,ve got some places to bear hunt that are fairly thick and the timber is huge....By keeping the barrel to 24" total the rifle isn,t unwieldy for fast close shooting .......
It is not uncommon for a wounded bear to hide behind a blowdown ...... result of bad shooting with small calibers .......

Wow this is an old thread. I have her finished and should shoot her in a few weeks some more. I have a set of go nogo gauges for the old brass if anyone needs them. Its a fun rifle.

Is the mag. box on a 505 Gibbs CZ 550 longer than that on any other CZ550 Safari Mag. ???
