Johan Calitz to Tony Makris after an elephant was side brained by Tony's 470 NE Hornady 500-grain DGS load: " ... We saw excellent penetration from the Hornady bullet. I like those flat noses. They keep the path more secure, and they don't deflect as easy as the round nose bullets, and they penetrate a little bit further, and you can see it here. Very seldom will you see, you know, a 470 with a round nose, you know, exit. And this one, just a little hole on the other side, straight through, this elephant dropped right on his tracks, and what a wonderful experience ... " An aggressive, hard-hitting bullet with an attitude to match, Hornady® DGS® bullets feature an advanced profile built of the toughest materials that penetrate through thick hide, dense muscle and hard bone -- delivering maximum stopping power. The business end of the DGS® bullet features a wide, flat nose that delivers maximum energy upon impact while resisting bullet deformation and deflection. Incorporating a very hard, high-antimony lead core with a copper-clad, steel jacket, this bullet maintains integrity and overall weight retention when driving through even the toughest hide and bone. Uniform in shape and size to the DGX®(Dangerous Game™ Expanding) bullet, you can reliably and accurately shoot both from the same firearm with little to no shift in point of aim or impact. Features: Flat Nose The flat nose eliminates possible deflections and resists deformation to achieve straight, deep penetration. The DGS® provides the perfect follow-up bullet when hunting dangerous game. DGX®/DGS® Uniformity Each caliber utilizes the same profile for both the DGS® and DGX® bullets, offering the ultimate uniformity, which is ideal when shooting both bullet types through the same firearm. Copper Clad Steel Jacket The heavy copper clad steel jacket and high antimony lead core penetrate deeply through hide, muscle and bone.

Doesn't Hornady sponsor the show? Conflict of interest here. Somehow I am sure Mr. Calitz would not say boo to a client shooting Woodleigh (RN) solids. As an aside, all my elephant were shot with Northfork flat nose bullets in .470, but to be honest, I know that if I had hit them in the same place with a good RN solid the elephants would be just as dead, even with a measly .375. (Side brain and neck shots) I understand there is a bit of a peeing match going on here about whether or not FN vs. RN work better- I feel that from what I read, what I have seen, and the experiences of some folks I trust that indeed the FN solids penetrate further and stay straighter than the RN, but I also (to the same level of confidence) feel that the only time that will come into play is shooting at the south end of a northbound elephant, which is something you really ought not do anyhow.

Frontal brain shot penetration on big bull elephant is the litmus test for all solids, side brain shots not so much. Flat nose or round nose, dead is dead. "An individual with experience is never at the mercies of an individual with an argument"
