Has anyone tried a luepold CDS system on a 378WM in hunting conditions? I just returned from Kodiak island, talking to my guide about this system and how it would work with a range finder for up/down hill shots. My concern is banging or getting dirt/ice in the cap (not sure how it is attached). Will this system stand up and hold true in these conditions. The 378 really shows its strength over the 300 yard mark with ttsx bullets, be a great combination if you can depend on it.

The 378 is a very under-appreciated round. the long-range ballistics are incredible. I have one by Charlie Sisk that shoots 6/10ths" groups with several different loads, and weighted up to be comfortable to shoot. It is a death-ray.

Art Alphin's book "Any Shot You Want" scared me away from it. He talked about the 500 A2's recoil be very manageable and then said he would never shoot a 378 Weatherby again lol.

Chuck

Take anything Alpin says with a VERY large dose of salt!

I have been using our own wildcat with similar performance for somany years, and love it.

In fact, I use it on all my African safaris, shooting all animals, from duikers to elephants with it.

Scope is a Leupold 2.5-8x

I agree-- I have had 2 different 378 and loved both, very managable--does it kick?? Oh...Yea but not going to lose life or limb, I find in a sharp thump. I have been using my 375 RUM quite a bit and love it. If it weights around 9-10lbs scoped or is braked it will be a pussycat!

I use M1 turrets on most of my hunting guns, I want to try the CDS because they are lower profile. I'd say they would work fine as long as you go back to zero after changing to a different yardage. I would rather dial in the range for long shots than hold over.

Saeed, what type of bullets are you using in that case? I am impressed with the carry out performance of the ttsx, they really hold on even at 500 yards. The 270 gr. tsx has around 2800 ft lbs at 500 yards according to weatherby, that is exceptional.

May have worded that wrong, by saying they hold on I mean they still have a lot of power at long range and drop more like your 300 wm than a big bore. Those bullets really are impressive.

416 with 350TTSX at 2800fps is sweet, too.

I have a Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8X with an illuminated reticle and M3 turrets on mine and it has held up well to shooting off the bench.

Thanks Saeed, I have a Rem XCR II that weighs 7 1/2 lb with scope in 375 Weatherby and that's just about enough for me ... Smiler
