Okay, we went to the range today, Mike, Richard, and Me Shooting (chronoed or not) 376 steyr 225gr at 2919fps (mex mauser 416 rigby 400gr at 2403 (550cz) 458 winchester (not chronoed) (602cz) 577 nitro 750gr at 2065 The steyr was like shooting a 22, the rigby was second in recoil, the 458 was a sissy, and the 577.. well... damn, can I say kicks the shit out of you on the internet? The stock on the 458 (new ish) split on the 6th shot, throwing chips into my hand. I am glad I had have a big paw, as it might have gotten around my glasses. 458 win winchester 510 sp factory loads. Doesn't look "cracked" but that stock will not be fired again. Will use it to inlet the mbogo and then send to www.gunstocks.com to inlett. I am always greatly surprised at how little recoil the 458 has. this 602 was LESS than 9#, little bitty scant stock. I am buying the barrel off mike, and going to make a 450 marlin, on a mex 36 action, in a winchester featherweight stock... ought to be a cute little cub gun, with iron sights.. like a mini express rifle. I might try to find a nice mauser 98 to screw it into, but I think it would be too cute to have it in 458x2.. shooting 500 gr leads at 1800fps. jeffe [ 01-04-2003, 23:50: Message edited by: jeffeosso ]

Jeffo, sounds like your having a good time !! I am getting interets in the plain old .458 win mag Jeffo and reading about your shooting one is causing me to want one deperately... , in a cz 550 of course and am thinking that were it fails as a African cartridge it can become an excellent all round cartridge for everything else. Here is my theory; Why buy a marlin 1895 when you can buy a cz 550 .458 win mag, lop the barrel to 21" or 22" and place a compact leupold 2.5x compact in talley or warnes on top. You have a greater capacity in the mag than the marlin (bar the long cowboy version), you can shoot 45/70 style bullets and and mainly you could use spitzer's, I am thinking in particular the 350 gr mag tip speers and you could shoot them faster and flatter than the marlin can, bolt guns are not that slow either when you get going. You have better standard sights from the factory than on the marlin, brass is cheap. I already have a marlin 45/70 but thats beside the point It could also be reamed for the lott and loaded back to .458 win mag specs for these uses. But I am thinking that the standard .458 win mag may actually be a pretty good round. I like the .376 steyr round to, were you shooting the 235 gr speers again what accuracy do you get with these ??

PC, I think that if I bought a CZ in 458, i would be itching to ream it to the lott.. and then experiment with 458 loads in the 458 chamber, 458 loads in the lott chamber, and then lott loads. Hell, I could even take this 458, chamber it for 458, and shoot 458x2" in it... like a 357 max, mag, 38 special in a .458 caliber... and hell yeah, I think you could have a darn good plinker with the 300 grain HP (designed for 45/70 speeds) at 2400-2500 fps.... flying BOMB I was shooting the hornady 225gr, that they build for the steyr. It's a 1/2" at 100.. but I was shooting off hand and "taking a knee" for a combined group of about 3.5" at 50... what a wonderful time cheers jeffe [ 01-05-2003, 02:36: Message edited by: jeffeosso ]

Jeffo, your probably right. The lott can be more versatile in every respect and now it is factory cartridge it is all the more reason to ream it. Do you think cz will bring the lott out as standard any time soon to combatt he ruger, surely there managment must have had the suggestion given to them ??
