Ray,

I have ordered a Lothar Walther in the H&H contour as you wrote about. A stepped Barrel did not appeal to me that much. And the H&H should still be classic looking enough I figure.

I too Ray would be most appreciative if you would post some pics of that! :-)

OK, photos are sent to Steve to post...It is the Holland and Holland I had some time ago...Both barrels are at Brockmans right now...but you'll get the idea on the contour and the 5 inch quarter rib that butts into the chamber ring of the barrel, my favorit setup.

I feel most American Custom builders make quarter ribs that are way too long and way to wide and add a pound plus to a rifle and you could land a small engine plane on most of them...The English knew a thang or two about hunting rifles...

I hope this is sufficient as its about the best I can do at the present, it should show you what your after I would think..it just has a step down about 2.5 inches in front of the action, then a taper to the crown and the 1/4 rib butts up to that drop off...I looks really nice. My other 375 has the same contour and it an old English gun of unknown make but of very high quality sans 1/4 rib and has a island sight with one standing and two down.

I think this may be the classic contour. This is the one I picked up a few months ago.

Ray,

In one of the photos it almost looks like you have a Lyman 48 receiver sight on the rifle. Is that the case?

If so, do you find that it works OK with a fixed standing rear sight?

I only ask, because I just purchased a like new Lyman 48 peep sight for a mauser and I would consider putting it on my planned 404 Jeffrey (on a 1909 Argentine action). However, I definitely want a quarter rib with one standing sight and two flip up sights.

What are your thoughts on this?

Also, I will most likely order your H&H contour from LW when it comes to ordering the barrel. What do you think the ideal barrel lenght should be on a 404 Jeffrey DG rifle? I'm thinking 24" at the moment.

Thanks.

Tim
