500 A Square looking good!!

.366torque500 A Square looking good!!
I just did some quick calculations and for me impressive! A Barnes 647 grn. X is good for 9034 ft. lbs. muzzle energy. Sighted at 250 it is 4.4 ins. high at 156 yds. and 11.6 low at 350 yds. It still retains 4197 ft. lbs. at 600 yds.!!

jeffeossowhat speed are you calculating that at?
650 is done about 2300

.366torque2300??
According to the reloading pages here at the Accurate Reloading pages Saeed's friend Mitch Carter developed loads for his at 128.5 grains of Rl.19 behind a 700 grain Barnes is good for 2409fps. With a 600 grn. Barnes 136 grns. of IMR 4350 is good for 2604fps. With these calculations 2500 fps. should not seem unreachable!

jeffeosso366,
Sounds like you are fully basing this on quickloads or something? I use that stuff, too.
have you got a bigbore? specifically a .50+?
700gr at 2400 with a FIVEFIFTY (550) is tops, with a 26" barrel...
and that's a 3" case, not a 2.9" ...
you can't get there, but build you one and see for yourself. 570s at 2500 is pretty hot.. and pretty well super hard to get.
just like a 500gr 458 lott exceeding 2300 hard to do safely.
Just cant get there from here, at sane pressure. S

.366torqueDamn!! I was wanting a .50 plus big bore specifically for this hitting power. I was hoping we were talking about two different rifles. Sorry if I came out indifferent, it is just that I have never owned above my .378 Weatherby improved. Thank you for your input! Now I will do other research and ask again in the future.

.366....exactly what kind of power are you looking for? A 600gr bullet at 2400fps is impressive enough in my book.

Here's a video I took of a buddy of mine (a fellow BC boy) shooting another member's 500 A2....
rubberneckThe 500 A2 is a real hoot. I was going to get one built a few years ago, but decided the 470 Mbogo is as much of a hoot and a lot more practical, so I went that route instead.
Cheers,
Canuck

Are you looking for hitting power or trajectory or both? The 550 Mag gets the power but won't shoot quite that flat. The 600 OK/510 has both but you may need a muzzle brake to shoot it.
Ed Hubel has done a 600 Overkill necked to .510. Ed Plummer at AHR would be glad to build one for you.

Both! I have been wanting a .50 plus for awhile and think it's time( well there's also time factor for gunsmith etc.)

.366torqueCanuck what action are you using?
21 December 2005, 03:52
Paul HJust remember each step you jump over 45 caliber, brass and bullets become harder to come by, and more expensive! I'd been all set to build a 600 ok, but then I got my 500 Jeffrey (should have been a 500 A-sq) and found that 600 gr is all the bullet I want to push out of a rifle, and it'll push it as fast as I want.

Michael RobinsonIn the .500 A2, 2,500 fps with a 600 grain bullet can be achieved within SAAMI pressure limits.
I have come very close--to about 2,475 or so, but I backed off to 2,300 fps. Not because of pressure problems, but for practical reasons.
I needed a good, manageable hunting load. For that, I found that 2,300 fps is plenty.

470 Mbogo.366
Canuck's 470 Mbogo is on a Ruger 77 Mk11 which was originally a 416 Rigby. The 500 A-square was on a Bruno 602 and is sitting in my gun cabinet. My advise to you would be to go and try someone's 50 cal loaded to 2400 fps for 10 or 15 shots and see if it's really what you want. Stop by the drug store and pick up some Asprin on the way.

Take care,
Dave

Thanks 470

The closest I can try out is a 460 Weatherby. So in comparison would it be like a 358 Norma to a 378? (these calibers I am familiar with and want an idea of how much more whallop factor with the big guns)

jeffeossoif you can take full house 460s fine, and I mean "shot 3 standing at 50 ... shoot a 22 for 1/2 and hour... shoot 3 more at 50" then you are certainly ready for a 470, 500, or 550.
when you can take a 460, take off the pad, and put the stock on your forehead.. and HIT what you aim at, you are ready for some of rob's stuff

Interesting exercise with the 22 in the middle of the bigbore shooting. I could ask but my experiance will be better if I just do it!

As for Rob, the man is is walking anti tank arsenal. I can't wait to see what he does next!

jeffeosso336,
Shooting the 22 will do 2 things...
1: show you how you are shooting (flinch, snatch, etc)
2: force you to use trigger control, and not feel "well, that was minute of buffalo"
And, well, it's loads of fun!!

RustyYou want something that hits???
Hell, go buy a Merkel 500 3 inch NE Double Rifle.
As far as I am concerned that round kills on both ends!

Here is something you may want to dream about.
I will be putting up more info after I visit with the developer.
The little one is a 30'06 with 180
The middle is a puny .375 with 300
The big boy is a 606.

GSWell, I shoot the two on the right;-)
Kind of curious what you are planning to shoot that the 378 WBY "Improved" !!!??? won't handle???
gs
26 December 2005, 01:29
.366torqueGS, it's not a question of need but of desire. There's nothing on God's great earth that a 378 WBY improved can't handle. However if we stopped there life would get dull. Check out the monster above your post. It is seated next to a 375 H&H, which is fully capable of DGR. Next please see robgunbuilders 12ga. From Hell, a 2000 grain bullet!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave, thanks! I've only been doing drive-by's of the forums the last few days and missed .366's question.
.366, Was looking through some of my online photo album and thought you might be interested in some more visual stimulation of the big-bore persuasion. Here's a pic of another good friend of ours, shooting Dave's 500 A2....
Cheers,
Canuck
