If a second recoil lug, of sufficient robustness, is attached to the barrel approximately 5" forward the reciever ring, as many here say is a must for a big bore, is the original receiver recoil lug necessary? It would seem to me that the barrel lug is far stronger, since there is a great deal more wood supporting it, and the retention of the receiver lug merely weakens the magazine mortise. An area many say is already far too weak. What do you all consider the best way to attach a barrel recoil lug? Best being defined as allowing for maximum shear strength and providing a stable bedding platform to support accuracy. Your thoughts, opinions, and comments are welcome. ASS_CLOWN

My gunsmith soldered a fairly thick, deep and wide steel lug about 6" ahead of the action on the bottom of my Brevex 416 barrel. Some folks dovetail them into the barrel but this one is only soldered. Like you said, the receiver lug doesn't offer much, and this rifle doesn't have magnum crossbolts. So far it is holding up fine, although it doesn't get used as much as my other rifles! He is doing the same on a Remington M-30 being rebarreled to 458 Lott.
