If someone would have told me a few years ago I would own anything bigger then a 30 caliber I would have told them they were crazy. After 3 plains games hunts, and being a member on AR, I finally decided to pull the trigger and book a buff hunt for 09 in Zim.

That of course meant I needed a rifle. I did my due my research and narrowed it down to a few choices. A great deal came up at a local SCI dinner and I went home that night with a CZ Safari Classic in 416 Rigby.

I had my gunsmith add a mercury recoil reducer, bed the barrel and set the trigger to 3.5 pounds . I topped her with a Leupold VX III 1.5 x 6 with Talley quick detach mounts. Here is what she looks like.

I took her out to the range finally for the first time last night and all I can say is WHAT A BLAST on so many different levels. It was an absolute joy to shoot something that throws that much lead. She seemed to like 350 gr speer (target loads) with 102 grains of 4831 or the 400 gr Barnes TSX I ordered a while back from Coneley. I plan on hunting with Barnes TSX and Barnes Solids, just need to decide between 350 or 400.

Many thanks to all the AR big bore community and the great info I have been able to find. I am a full blown convert.

That'll work!!!

I used the 350s driven at a chrono'd 2700 fps with 98 gr of AA4350 ignited by Fed 215s on a Cape Buffalo and a Bison in 2006. Penetration and expansion were fine!

Use the one the rifle and your shoulder likes best.

Is that a piece of wood or what? And two cross bolts. Even the checkering looks good. What is happening to CZ? Smiler

I have gotten quite a few compliments on the grain on the wood and was quite happy it came with the two crossbolts.

For a first time on the range I was very impressed on how it handled and the groupings it shot. A little more work and she'll be ready to to rock.

So damn true.
When I got my first .416 (had to be in the early '80s) I thought - "This is it, the biggest, baddest thing I will ever need or own." I was right about it being the biggest thing I would ever need, but ...

Oh and BTW, my avatar is that of a .416 Swift A-Frame recovered from the skin over right hip of an Elk after passing through and breaking the left shoulder and pulverizing the heart, lungs and paunch at more than three football fields.

Hutty, Get you some AA5744 to use with those 350 Speers for some nice low recoil plinking/practice rounds. 55grs of 5744 recoils about like a 300 mag. 50gr. recoils like a 270. Fun to shoot and accurate as hell too. I put 3 shots of hte 55gr. charge into 5/8" with my Ruger. I'll bet you can get similar results with the CZ. Makes for nice low recoil practice. You'll have to readjust your scope though.
