I have a Winchester 70 in .375 H&H and have thought to go with a Leupold VX-3, 1.5-5x5 Illuminated for hunting brown/grizzly bears in Alaska. However, I find that optic no longer being offered. I'm looking for suggestions, keeping in consideration the rather long tube needed for the weapon. Thanks in advance. If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

Redlander, I have an as new 1x4 Trijicon with an amber illuminated post. It would be about perfect for your described usage and it fit my Model 70 perfectly. I'd like to get $675 for it to include shipping. Any interest? I'll throw in the Talley rings also. Mark MARK H. Not to throw any water on Mark's offer, but my go-to Winchester Model 70 .375 carries a Swarovski Z6i, 1.7-10X42. The perfect scope for it. ![]()

There are scope.bases to resolve the tube length vs. action length worries. Pick the scope you want and then hoose appropriate bases and rings. Take a look at the VXR range if you like Leupold.

Z6i is too spendy for me. Heck, I moved to Alaska because I'd never be able to hunt brown/grizzly bears or sheep as a non-resident. If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

I just recently picked up a Leupold 1.5x5 on flee bay, excellent condition for well under $300.00. _____________________ Steve Traxson

Yes they still do. It's listed under VX-3i on the Leupold website. Or you could go with a VXR 1x4. I have one and like it very much. It's a 30mm tube if that matters. Roger ___________________________ I'm a trophy hunter - until something better comes along. *we band of 45-70ers*

I run a Leupold VX3 in 1.75-6x on my pre 64 Win 70 375 H&H. I use Leupold QR bases and rings. The new model is also VX3i, 1.75-6x PA Bear Hunter, NRA Benefactor

all good suggestions. The Vortex pst 1-4x24 has just as clear of glass as the leupolds and trijicons and one of the best hunting reticles I've ever seen. I'd put the reticle as intuitive as the accupoint. These scopes are tough and track true. I recently dropped my rifle and vortex off the top of my SUV on the highway(my first time leaving a rifle on the top of my car) the tube got bent. I took it to the range and the point of impact had changed, but it still shot a near half inch group with my 416 Remington. Vortex replaced it for free. The only issue is it is a bit heavy and It was barely slipping in aluminum rings on my 416 rem. I think it would hold steady on 375h&h and down. This option is a little more obscure of a choice as it is marketed as more of a tactical scope but it would make an excellent hunting scope. Trijicons are great scopes too and the accupoint, flat out, is my favorite reticle. The only thing I can't get over is how much they charge for them now days. For that price, I think there's better options unless you get it used or on clearance.

I've taken most of my bears with irons, do however scope meat guns with low power that are able to be used in close. Don't know if that makes sense or not.

Leupold vx6 1-6 fire dot. Great scope, not too heavy, not too pricy.

This one, for a hunting scope. For those same reasons. The firedot mechanism works well.

My favorite .375 scope is the leupold 2.5x8. Enough magnification for 200 yard shots and at 2.5 power there is no need to fear the alders... Recently put a 2.5x8 Zeiss Duralyt on a .375 I had Duane Wiebe build for me. 30mm tube insures plenty of light gathering capabilities. Didn't get the lighted reticle version but they make one. I have 2 .375's with this scope and really love it, I have a Leupold 2-7 on my .400 Whelen and that works great too.

I like Night Force, but they might be a tad expensive for some. My 375H and 416Rem wear 2.5-10x24 with the FC-2 reticle. Sun Optics makes a scope that is the exact same size and weight and identical in every way I can measure to the Nikon African 1-4x24 illuminated, except it costs about $250. I see them on GB quite often. Additionally, Night Force is the only company I have found so far that makes a Picatinny rail for the magnum length Mod 70. My 375, 416, and 458 model 70s all wear this Pic rail. It makes for easy scope mounting. I have a 1-4x24 Swarovski on a Sako 416 Remington Mag. It fits fine. Leupold and Talley make reversible front scope bases. Of course, the ultimate is a tie between the Swarovski 1-6 illuminated or der Schmitt und Bender close range with "Fire Dot" If you have QD scope mounts, try and mount light gathering fiber optics on you metallic/open sight bases. NECG and Brownells both sell such items. Good luck. ![]()

Well a brown bear is a prett big target, regardless of the range, but long shots are not all that common as it makes the good guides nervous! I would just use a fixed 3X or 4X Leupold, they have been working well for me for a year or two on Dangerous Game of all sorts.. I know, Im old and sot in my ways and the youngsters disagree, but remember they are still learning!! ![]() Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

I have the same VX3 on my 9.3x62. One thing I found is that the reticle is pretty thick, but since this isn't a long range precision shooting rifle and it still can shoot 5 shots in a quarter sized hole at 100 yards, it's probably OK!
