Anyone have any decient source for shot out pre 64 actions? I know I will need to buy the whole gun just to get the action but I don't want to spend 1500 just to get the action.

As some may have seen I'm looking at a 300H&H which I still may pick up but there are a number of other projects I have floating around in my brain to do on Pre 64 actions and don't want to spend hugh dollars just for a donor.

I could always go and get a dakota 76 action but that's more than I wan to spend. Don't get me wrong I would if I though they had a really good product ready to go but I've always found that they need some work. I've been using the GMA actions lately and although the same is true I like the double square bridge.

Enough BS. If any of you have a hidden stock pile of these things that you wouldn't mind sharing I would really appreciate it. I've got 5 rifle I want to build and I'm thinking about 2 or 3 others that I would like to all do on the pre 64 model 70.

Thanks for all your advise.

John

Sorry George, I meant to put this in Gunsmithing. I think I'm getting worse with the computer everyday. Please feel free to move it or not as you see fit. Sorry, John

Call Howard at the Gunstop here in Minnesota. Phone is 952-474-4570. He's a standup guy and has a couple dozen model 70s on the shelf in various condition. Complete rifles in the $600 range. I'd be interested in the left over parts and if you sell everything but the action you'll probably only have 400-500 into it. Tell Howard that Hollywood sent you.

GO west young man!!!!!! Or old if it fits your boat, Wink

Bozeman and California money has your prices all inflated. GO check out gunshows in Missoula or Libby (better) or bump around the N Idaho shows, you can find a 30-06 or a 270 beater for the $500.00 price range. Remember with pre 64 Model 70's are one size fits all, the mags are the same action just opened up.

I don't think anybody has a stash of pre 64's sitting around. If I did I would have the next 10 years of gun projects lined up.

Spokane show is coming up I think you it draws dealers from Idaho, mid and eastern Washington, and western Montana, pretty good odds of finding one there.

I wish I had seen this post a couple of years ago, I had 16 nice P-64s in divers calibers plus 5 very nice actions sitting in my gun safe. I gradually reduced to ten rifles only as I cannot justify spending any more cash on custom rifles that I often lose interest in as soon as they are built. I do know that Kesslering's Gun Shop in Alger, WA. used to have P-64 actions on hand and although they are not a "cut-rate" shop, they are VERY honest and excellent to deal with.

If, I wanted another P-64 type rifle, I would look very hard at one of the Waffen-Hein (sp) actions, actually, I would probably just buy the rifle from them as I am NOT a gunsmith. Worth a look, anyway.

Why not use a Montana magnum action, its basically a pre 64, cost about $400.... I looked at some of the latest ones over at Brockmans and they sure were nice...The early ones left me a little cold but apparantly they have improved them a good deal....Jim Brockman, Dennis Olson and others sure are liking them..

Libby...I have more guns then some of there gun shows. lol Missoula's is going down hill. Spokane always has a good show though and I liked going to that one while I was up there. Sandpoints is good to.

Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent.

Could be possible, but the last show up there a few weks back a lot of nice stuff showed up. I was whinning a few weeks back on missing a supergrade 30-06 circa 1955, it went for a little over $800.

Missoula has gotten more expensive the last few years I must agree. All the shows are hit or miss kinda depends on who shows up. The CDA show recently had some nice stuff, and yes the prices were reflective of the goods.

Your statement about the Missoula show going down hill is pretty much the state of affairs of most of the shows these days.

St. Maries has a small show also and this can be another buyers show.

Good thought all. I will try the gun shows. Did that sceen for quite awhile but was never anything but over priced junk.

I will try the MRC route and see what I can come up with.

Fritz,

Did you call Howard at the Gunstop yet? Spoke to him a while ago and I think he even has a few actions.
