Managed to locate a box of Barnes .416 400gr Monolithic Solids for my .416 Rigby yesterday. Does anyone have first hand experience of this bullet's performance on buffalo? I'm also wondering about the alloy its made from and whether there could be excessive rifling wear and/or fouling. We simply don't have the variety of premium bullets available in the UK that you do in the USA. I was lucky to find this box.

Spie, the barnes 416 is a monolithe solid... single piece of metal, and have been found, in most rems and rigbys, to be VERY accurate. I don't have anything but direct second hand info on buff,,,, recovered on far side, engraved rifling, not much damage, 100% weight... which is good enough for ME jeffe

My experience on buffalo is that they worked exceedingly well. In truth,I did not use them on the first shot, prefering the "X" bullet, but follow up shots when necessary were Barnes solids. All completely penetrated the animals. I have a 416 Rem Mag M70 Safari Express that shoots the Barnes bullets very well. I tried one of the "cupped solids" made by another company but incredibly the bullets tumbled. Those same "cupped" bullets fired from a 416 Rigby did not tumble...go figure. My guess is that it may be the twist difference between the two rifles. I am an advocate of barnes bullets for large caliber rifles and dangerous game.

Spie, My hunting partner went to Australia with a .416 and used Barnes monos and flattened an Australian buf with 96 inch horns...Hit him with the first shot at 35 yds knocked him down...Broke both shoulders and hit hime twice more trying to get up.. As for wear on a steel barrel no...They are hard but not as hard as steel.. Mike
