I asked this question on 2 other forums, didn't get any answers, I'll try here. Anyone have any reduced load recommendations for cast bullets for the Lott? Thanks!

How much reduction are you looking for? 45 colt pistol, 45-70, 458 win mag? I finally got dies for my 458 Lott, and I do have a 500 gr mold. Hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll get around to working up some loads and getting out to the range. I would expect RL-7 to be a good powder to provide ~1800 fps loads with the 500 gr cast, but I don't recall coming by any pertanent data. There might be someting to go by from some older handloader articles for the 458 win mag and some of the other 45 wildcats.

Here's what I use in my 458 Win Mag. I had the bullet made for a 45 caliber muzzle loader bullet gun. Hoch made the mold to my specifications which were a cast diameter of .451 except for the front band, which is .457. For paper patching I size the front band to .451 and patch with .0035 onion paper. Bullet material is wheel weights. Full speed loads at roughly 2150 group 2.5 inches at 100 yds (3 shot). Incidentally, I crimp with a Lee factory crimp die for a 45-70. The dummy cartridge in the photo is over crimped.

Roger, I see that bullet of yours is PB. Wouldn't it be better gas checked? Just curious if you have any leading problems at all.

Pecos45 When I use them in the 458 they are paper patched so there isn't any leading whatsoever. When I use them in the muzzle loader they aren't going fast enough to lead, or at least I haven't had a problem so far.

Thanks gentlemen. I obtained some 420 gn flat nose, 492 gn pointed and 520 gn round nose bullets from a friend, wheel weight alloy. I decided on XMP5722 from Accurate Powder, specifically for reduced loads in large straight cases. I've successfully used it with 375 & 416 cast bullet loads. I loaded the 420s in front of 49 gns for about 2000fps and the 492s in front of 46 gns for about 1850fps. They are well lubed but no paper patches or gas checks. Haven't tried them yet so don't know how they'll do (Ruger #1).
