Sitting here on my desk is a CZ 550 action, in the white, 416 rigby case head diameter. I have a few options... a 500 A2/ 510wells, a 585 Nyati, 500 jeffe, gibbs etc. Most of the work will be done by me, it will be rust blued, 22", fitted with a quarter rib, 1 standing 1 leaf. NECG master front banded and banded front sling.
Please help, I am a sick little boy with alot of gun projects this year, and school is starting next week, I am afraid my mind is not so clear on cartridge selection.

If i had to do it again.. it might be a 500 a2 /510 wells. -- quickest, easist way to get there.. have the barrel cut as a #6 shilen, get the rib from brownells....m poof!! you're shooting

Ditto, I wouldn't do a 500 Jeffrey again either, the slightly bigger case isn't worth the additional cost of the brass over the 500 A2.

The bigger bores are quantum dollars more to set up and feed, though I must say the 600 OK would be my choice for bigger then a 50. If you're going big and spendy to feed, might as well go as big as the action can take!

I think i am finding that the 500, in a 10# is just about my limit.. and might be over it. I am having some trouble getting back to it.. but that will pass....

the woundabeast stuff is so much more affordable, from brass, and you can get it yesterday...

i KNOW i can't shoot an unbraked, and under 13# 585, 577, or 600... so i wont be having one.

Honestly, I think I will go with the 500A-2. This rifle MIGHT be sold when I am done, and the A-2 is a good selling point.
I also have a Ruger #1 here, which I thought about turning into a 500 3", But the gun is winding up pretty light. So we shall see.

Hi Smallfry,
Interested in a 470? Jeffe have you and Mike been to the range yet? I think that guys that are thinking about a 500 A Square should really go out and try one with without a muzzle brake and shoot 10 to 15 full power loads and then decide if it's really the ticket for them or not.
Take care,
Dave

Dave... I am glad you joined in. Let me state... I have never fired a 500A-2 but have a 500 Farq, and a 577 double. I am small, but have always been fairly recoil tolerant. With that being said... I would like to duplicate the 500 3" or maybe a bit more. I will have to play with it some to see where I am comfortable with it. I have always enjoyed your video clips... esp... "rubberneck" he seems like a large man.
I am not much interested in any 470s and have never been. Maybe you can expand on some of your experiances with the 500A-2? And others reading this... please expand on some of yours.

I'm inclined to say bigger is better, but to a point.
I want to be able to like the thing when I'm done!
My vote goes for the 470 Mbogo.
He did a good job on that one.
Reasonably insane.

Dave,
I JUST (hands just washed) got in from shooting the 500 jeffe... Mike hasn't finished his yet...

I think i forgot to say, if I did a wells/a2, i would load it at jeffery loads.... just shot 40 at 2250.... 10.5#...

I shot a sub 4" (8 rounds)group, off hand, at 50 today... take out 2 fliers and it's right at 3... minute of buffalo eye!!

I couldn't imagine a full house wells/a2 without ether LOTS more weight, or a brake.. or both...

Jeffe, I was thinking 570s from 2150-2250, around there, and obviously id try the 600s.
THE only animal I have taken with a 500 is a elk, raked through the ribs at 60 yards with a 500 3" 570wdly at 2150. I did not get an exit, it did a great amount of dammage and did its job.
the rifle I shot there was a farq falling block, that weighed less then 9lbs. It is a fantastic elk rifle, but unfortunatly not mine.
I think some crank up their 500A2(s) to 2400 with 600 grainers... No thanks id rather go up a caliber if I wanted that kind of abuse.

HI Smallfry,
I've always shot my 500 A-Square at 2400 with the 600 grain bullets. It's good to take out and shoot with a group of guys for fun but a steady dose does add up. You should really make sure that you get a good stock and recoil pad to help make it a functionable rifle that you'll take out of the gun cabinet regularly. The 500 with full loads is a chrusher of a firearm. Loading it down to 2150 with a 600 grain bullet should be a very comfortable and a low pressure cartridge to boot. The best of luck with your project. Keep us posted and pictures please.
Take care
Dave

Go for the 500 A2. It's simple, and straightforeward. No boltface changes. Use a file on the rails and watch what the feeding tells you to do. Do Not even think about a 500 jeffery on that action. It flat won't work without a single stack magazine. Don't waste your time on a 585 NYATI without a proper neck reamer.
Put your effort into reinforcing the stock.-Rob

Yeah I am pretty set on putting it into a 500 A2. Hell or high water I would like to put a quarter rib on it, and thought of using one of the Dakota pre-fitted ones. Problem is... they only go as high as a shilen #5. Though that mikes out to be .700 at the muzzle on a 26" finished length. However my barrel is going to be 22, off hand... does anyone know what the diameter will be at 22" on the number 5, perhaps to thin? If so... ill have to recontour the quarter rib or just make my own at school.
ahhhhhhh school, it started today, and I fell into instant depression, the only thing that kept me awake was the smell of fresh freshman girls.
