My dad has had deer damage permits, and through that I have shot 9 deer with the cartridge. I also shot a woodchuck and a squirrel. Ha. On deer, even a big one, I am shooting 225 gr. at 2700 and it is leaving a two inch exit hole and in a couple of them the damage was horrifying. But I shot four of them around 250 yards, and one was a running shot at 200 yards and it was perfect. I think it was the best shot I had ever done, obviously luck was pry the biggest factor. But I have had great luck with the cartridge.

My son shot a cape buff at 60yds with his Ruger 375 African six weeks ago with a down loaded reload 300 grain Swift bullet @ 2450 fps broke shoulder-two ribs and ended under the skin on the other side 92% weight retention on bullet. He will be elk hunting with 270 grain Swift bullets in Oct.

I've used mine for wild boar (300 gr) , bear (300 gr), deer (225 gr) and a couple of raccoons and coyote (200 gr). I have no problems with the caliber, but the rifles sold by Ruger, on the other hand, are horrible.

Horrifying?

What did you expect that buffalo gun to do to your 100 pound whitetail?

I doubt that it has seen much use as yet as its a new round, but I assure you that it is the full equal to the 375 H&H, and that is no slight praise, as that old girl has been killing big mean animals for several decades.

Strawman,
Use the .270 or 300 gr. bullets and you will get good kills and much less damage to meat..I have fed camps on Impala shot with the 300 gr Woodliehs, Noslers and various other makes. Big old hole and very little bloodshot meat, leaves a good blood trail and they don't go much over 50 yards if that.

I beleave either cartrigde could do the job. The 458 Win mag or the 458 Lott. But the 458 Lott could reach ferther.

I've got some 270 grain loads I will try, they are moving the same speed though. I knew the damage would be bad, but I've seen shotgun slug holes, much bigger in diameter but obviously less velocity and less meat damage. I guess I just didn't view 2700 fps as that fast.
