CRB,
That is why I stated it would depend on where you hunt!

I'm aware that Kenya is closed, but they have Mt. Bongo there..I was of the opinion that CAR and other Northern countries had Bongo available?? I have not hunted Bongo nor booked any Bongo hunts in many years, but have talked Bongo hunting with many PHs and booking agents, and my reply was based on their opinnions. I do have a PH that can do Bongo hunts however, but I seldom get a request for hunts north of Tanzania.

Ray, they do have bongo in CAR, Cameroon, and Congo, but it is a forest hunt, generally tracking, although occasionally in a Machan over a cleared area, but shooting distances are in feet, not yards generally.

A short good pointing rifle would be best.

From what I was told a scope is useful to hit a small opening- but you take what you can get.

The long cross canyon shots on bongo were a thing of Kenya, not the rain forests.

Never mind about Ray-Ray. He has no idea what the discussion is about and he obviously did not read the posts in the thread, the title nor even the OP, with any degree of reading comprehension. He has never hunted Bongo, the rain forest nor Cameroon. So he has zero to contribute to the discussion.

BTW, from a geographic standpoint, Cameroon, (not CAR - they are two different countries Ray-Ray) is more often considered to be West of Kenya and Tanzania. Never heard it referred to as a "Northern" country but rather as West Africa.

But thanks for playing Ray-Ray. Always a pleasure to read your well thought out replies. Remember, drinking and writing should never occur at the same time!

On the internet it is always good to give someone the benefit of the doubt and try to understand their perspective before dissing and bitching.

Yes, CAR is North of Tanzania.

As for Bongo, they were in the southeast (near CAR border) of what is now South Sudan, though I do not know about their numbers after the war (probably fine and protected by the heavy forest and far from the war zones) and I do not know if and when hunting will be reopened in South Sudan.

On caliber, I think I remember James Mellon (African Hunter) taking one in the moonlight across an open area in southern Sudan (?) with a 300WM. But generally heavy caliber and solids are recommended for thick forest.

Damn I'm sorry Mike, having been in the hunting business for years and having hunted most of Africa extensively and talking Africa for the last 40 years I thought I was passing on what The "experts" had told me and I so stated that, and added that it depends on where you hunt..Guess I was talking to the wrong experts, I feel blessed on this blog to have you handy to keep me on the straight and narrow. Ill pay more attention form now on, after all its a life and death thread.

Today I chased 14 bongo in a 60 acres high fenced dense Florida brush. Could not see one. If they don't want to be seen they are impossible.

I think you have the right gun and a 375 ruger alaskan would be perfect too.

I will post a picture of another group that was in the open. These are the ones from Kenya and hopefully headed back there one of these days.
