450x400 3 inch

Ok noob question, the 450 400 3 inch, is that another name for the 450 NE? Reading on this form and several books has me confused. Please set me straight!

450/400 3" & 450 NE are two different cartriges. 450 NE has more power & uses a 458 bullet whilw 450/400 3" is somewhat milder and uses a 411 bullet. I believe that the 450 NE was the first large bore nitro powder cartridge.

Usually just 450/400, or 450/400 3", as there is also an older 3 1/4" version.

The 450/400 Nitro Express 3" is an amazing double rifle cartridge with a wonderfully rich story of success in Africa. While I enjoy shooting the larger calibers... my "go to" double rifle is the 450/400. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Snow, that would be great, the 450 400 3 inch is what is calling to me.

I cannot take credit for this info as I obtained it from a post elsewhere on the forum. Having said that it works for me in my Sabatti 450/400. The usual caveats apply.

I chronoed factory Hornady 450/400 DGX at 2040-2050 fps from a 24" Sabatti and a Ruger #1. The load I used to emulate the factory ballistics was 80.5 grains of H4831 SC loaded at 3.675" OAL with a 400 DGX, Hornady brass, F215 primer and a crimped bullet. It gave 2051 fps. Crimping adds 60 fps and is required to produced the most consistant loads.

While searching for my DR I had visions of a .470NE or maybe a 450 NE No.2. The opportunity to purchase a Sabatti in 450/400 came along and while it wasn't my "dream" cartridge I decided to go for it as several other folks had sang the praises of the 450/400. While I haven't taken any critters with it yet I can easily say I am glad that I followed the advice given. Components are easy to get and it fits into my existing press. Its a long, tapered case so it still has the nostalgic appeal.

There is a good bit of info scattered around on the 450/400NE. Hornady #8 manual has info on it.
There are a few posts of range reports here on AR with various bullets, 210 Hornady & 300gr Hornady.
There are posts around for cast bullets as well.
It is a pretty versatile cartridge, you can load it down to the 210gr stuff, or crank it up with the 400gr in the Ruger, and play with a host of bullets in between.

Eric, I see these Sabattis out there, for the cost, they are a steal, have you had the dreaded regulating issues that I read about? I don't want to make a mistake but I also here of guys haing great luck with them.

No complaints with mine other than the recoil pad. Cabela's is aware of the Dremel method of regulation and the problem it presents. Their guarantee on new guns is such that they will make it right if there is a problem. Mine shoots great. Look at the muzzles. If they are nice and sharp I would expect the gun to shoot well.

You are quite fortunate to live in close proximity to Cal. He is a wealth of knowledge and a very helpful guy on top of that. Let us know what you decide.
