I would not use Claro on a 416 because Claro is a little soft. Bastone, Turkish, French or American Black walnut would probably be better choices from a durability standpoint.

I would go with the Bastogne as it is a heavy tough and pretty wood, good for big bore rifles....Any walnut can have good wood, but its very hard to find claro or black that is good enough for me to use on one of my big bore rifles...My favorite is Russian, turkish, French thin shelled walnuts...Tukish is the most available today and probably the best, however soon Russian will become available and it will be the best wood ever....

I agree with the above replys. Claro is a fine wood and I've used it in my 6X45, my .223 and a .257 Roberts. It's lightweight wood and less dense than other woods. It's not good for fine checkering (which suits me fine) and a big bore should really have wood of greater density like english or french walnut.

Ray, tell us more about this Russian Walnut.....
