I don't know, but I am seriously considering taking off the barrels of the .375, .416 and .458 that I have and selling them on Ebay. I could then get all custom Barrels!!!!

That site is comedy central. Several months ago some dork bought empty ole' Ithaca Gun Co. Roll Eyes tin oil can for $850. Now, if that was an anvil by Gebr. Parker of Meriden, CT I would not laugh. Wink

jut goes to prove that not all crackheads are focused exclusively on their next high. The bidder is proof that two fools meet all too often.

Since eBay went to disguising bidders' identities, it makes it tougher for others to determine whether a bidder is legitimate or not (only the seller and that bidder see the bidder's username).

Chances are that bogus bidders, hacked accounts, and shills are responsible for the outrageous bids you see.

I'd be shocked if the seller sees $511 for that barrel.

I find that a bit annoying myself as you seem to be bidding against phantoms.

George is correct. Recently when bidding on items my bid was 2nd or 3rd from the top and one day after the auction ended the seller would email me telling me the winning bidder failed to complete the transaction and I could have the item for $1 less than the high bidder.
People hide for a reason.

This was probably a "by bid" situation. The seller probably has another id or a buddy that bids things up for him.

If the term "caveat emptor" applies to anything, it applies to dealing on E-Bay.

Everything from stolen car rings being busted by using e-bay to counterfeit goods. And then there is the ever present "shill bidding", when a seller runs up the price of an item. Check out the links below - it has been a common problem for at least the last 7 years.

E Bay has little incentive to stop this practice, since they get a cut out of every sale.

it's where you and a buddy make a deal to bid each other's sale merchandise on Ebay. The idea is to only bid it up a few bucks so the legitimate buyer(s) don't realize they're getting a screwing until it's too late. A guy wants, say, $500 for something. He doesn't want to watch the sale item not get bid on, so he sets the bid at say, $100. His friend(s) bid it up in $25 increments against legitimate bidders until they get somebody to bid the actual desired selling price...or a bit more. Then they drop out and you get it for too much money. People get into these crazy "gotta have it" bidding wars sometimes... the idea here is to lather up the crowd.

It's just another scam that Ebay has going.

While I will agree it happens on Ebay alot I have not done this and have had some stuff sell way high. Also it happens at every auction held anywhere. It happens all the time at cattle auctions. The guy bids on his own cattle to jack the price. Auctions are auctions a person needs to know what he is willing to pay and pay no more. It is still a great site and I have gotten some great deals on Ebay. I have also gotten some crappy ones. It is all part of the game!
