............... always the same crowd involved. By the way I love the 45/70, although I have never shot bears or seen any.....unless Koala Bears count If they where legal to shoot I wonder if I should use my Marlin 45/70 with 405 gr woodleigh's or my cz .458 lott with 500 gr woodleigh's for Koala Bears.....or do I need my .585 Nyati loaded with 750 gr woodleigh's I probably need a dgr as they can get quite agressive....particularly as they spend most of there time intoxicated on eucalypt leaves. I suppose now I need pictures For fuck sake talk rifles......and like anything on the internet take all the stuff here with a grain of salt and pop some fucking mogodon before you log on

GeorgeS apparently you are not familar with the black bears of Penna. a 600 pounder doesn't even make the local paper other than maybe on the list of succefull hunters, last year alone there were 3 in excess of 800 pounds and to the best of my recollection they didn't even make the papers but are listed on the PGC's site. Pa's media (newspapers) isn't much different than Calf. mater of fact most are OWNED by companies in Calif. I do have some snapshots I took though. BTW a 45-70 and a 458 use the same diameter bullets going at the same speed of 2000fps. BB

George, Great job sniffing out another one of those "no pictures for proof" trolls! Ballbuster, A .510 bullet of 535+ grains doing better than 2280 fps will DEFINITELY out perform your 45-70. I am VERY confident of that. Why, you ask? Because while I have shot NOTHING with a 45-70, I have shot many animals with a 458 Win mag shooting 405 gr bullets @ 2250+ fps, and I have shot many animals with a .510 bullet of 535+ grains doing better than 2280 fps. The 0.510 bullet was significantly MORE effective. Hey George, ask me for pictures, I won't post any! ASS_CLOWN

I am familiar with PA black bears, and I know a bunch of big ones (500lbs.) get shot just about every year. Still, you'd think the outdoor column in a local paper (not a chain) would have at least a photo or two. Post your snapshots; it's always fun to look at hunting photos. BTW, I stated a .458Win.Mag. driving a 500gr., not a 400gr. bullet. Good luck driving a 500gr. bullet at 2000fps in your .45-70. Even Randy Garrett doesn't make that claim. George

Triple Trophy Sporting Goods, I have a store in the Lehigh Valley (archery and guns) an another up in Potter Co. along rt 49 ( Clothing, hdware, fly fishing, archery, guns). That is where I am right now as I enjoy the mountains in the fall much more than the suburban areas. Stop by I'm there most nights till closeing we'll step into my office an "talk shop". Defensive how couldn't I be to someone that counters each of my posts with questions about them. As if ti try an draw me into some sort of an adrguement to try an prove myself. I didn't get this old by not being able to see a bluff charge when one pops up! BB

Well let's start from the top. "My" favorite big bore is the 45-70. I don't see anything wrong with that statement, I am very fond of the 45-70 also. "For Pa black bears that can weigh up to 800lbs" Hmm don't see anything wrong with that either according to Pennsylvania data (available on the web) the average black bears weight is from 300 to 600lbs. HuntingPa.com will take you into the Boone and Crocket site where I believe the 1998 Pa. record was well over 800lbs. Hmm no problem so far. "I cannot imagine a caliber that would do a better job" The key in that statement is "I" however we do have chocolate and vanilla and you are indeed entitled to your opinion, and as someone once wrote "Dead Is Dead" even with a .405gn bullet going several hundred fps slower than a .458WM (BTW I love the .458) Why would anyone not consider a .45 cal bullet going "near" 2000 fps a big bore? I don't know?? I can get 1900fps with a .405gn bullet using a 1895 and 3031, and can hit 2000fps in a Ruger #3 using 500gn bullets and 3031, so I can't say why someone would not consider it a big bore! With all this said in your defense, I am waiting along with the others for your pictures which should end this debate. GeorgeS, I love the picture of your Cape Buffalo. Take care to all of you and God bless. OOPS I did want to mention that my figures are rounded off, my AccuLoad program is down and I had to go with the book. Again God bless. cordell

BALLBUSTER You going to get a controversy going here. Don't any one else read this, it's between Ballbuster and me. (I dearly love the 45-70 and would use it most anything smaller then a locomotive, there's them around here who will tell you the 45-70 isn't good for anything larger then bull butterflys.) Jim
