Can anyone point me toward a table or listing that shows how much corditewas loaded as a propellant in the cartridges loaded by the British arms industry before they switched to the more efficient continental flake powders?

Many thanks,

LD

I can provide you with one. I don't know of one on the web. Sounds like you may have some misinformation. Most of the flanged nitros were never loaded with nitrocellulose. Kynoch (the only British company loading centerfire metallic rifle after 1924) loaded Cordite in most until they closed in 1973. The flanged nitros that they did load with nitrocellulose were, generally, never loaded with Cordite. Some of the rimless shells initially loaded with Cordite were eventually loaded with NC, but not all that many.

Let me know which calibers you want.

Charlie,

I have a copy of Hoyem's British Sporting Rifle Cartridges. It has them all listed and many calibers used different amounts with different loads. Your welcome to borrow it.

In Taylors 'African Rifles and Cartridges' there is an accurate table including lists of 'tropical' loads.

Hi Walt, Ganyana and 400 NE,

Walt, Sorry about laying low for a while. If I could borrow your book for a bit, I would be most appreciative. I am anxiously awaiting the second edition; first editions are a bit dear on the used book market.

Ganyana, I will order a copy of Taylor's book forthwith.

400 NE, if you could mail me a copy of the table, I would be very happy. I'm not worried about the rimmed cartridges as much as cartridges that were loaded with cordite. For production purposes I am going to offer cartridges loaded with RL-15 and a space filler. That is to provide customers with less recoil with identical performance.

Thanks to all.

LD

God bless you guys.

Please stop by some evening Walt. I'm at the clinic this Saturday and Sunday, as well as all next week. I also have some eye candy for you to check over and dream about.

Appendix 3 of Shooting the British Double Rifle by Graeme Wright (1999) Second Edition (ISBN 0 949749 40 0) has listing of original charge loads and bullet weights etc.

Page 144 / Appendix of Intl. Big Bore Cartridge Load Data Collection by Pierre van der Walt (200?) (ISBN 0 620 358521 1) hascordite / nitro load adaption guidelines.

I obtained boh these titles by mail order from the USA, so you should be ok in finding them.

Danke Schoen!

I didn't know that Graeme Write had finished his second edition. I have it on back order from here to Timbuktu. I'll recheck.
