Blaser R8 101 questions? Login/Join

I used to be the proud owner of 5 R93 receivers and 13 barrels.

The whole "blown up face, blown up rifle" thing happened and I sold my entire collection.

Against my better judgement I am interested in the R8 rifles.

I have some questions;

1. Can the Success stock be opened up to fit a safari or match barrel?

2. What is the difference between a safari professional and a professional stock?

3. R93 barrels were a bastard to put a muzzle brake on. Something to do with the hard black chrome finish. Are R8's the same?

4. R93 professional stocks were made out of woodpecker lips, they were about indistructable. Are R8 stocks as tough?

5. R93 professional stocks could be opened up with sand paper and dowel to a bigger diameter barrel, I assume this is the same?

thanks folks!

Yes, on the Success stock. I'm not sure if you can order one in a safari channel (people say you can), but if not, Blaser will do it for $150.

A Safari Pro has a solid steel receiver and a built-in Kick Stop in the Butt. A Pro is a regular synthetic stock, with alloy used in some parts of the receiver. I have both a Safari Pro and a Pro (with wide barrel channel). I use the heavier rifle for my 458 Lott and sometimes 375 H&H barrels, but go to the lighter stock for calibers under that.

Blaser barrels are nitrided, so yes...you need carbide tools to work on them. There are a number of folks that will do it, including Blaser USA in Texas.

R8 Pro stocks are made of the same material as the R93 rifles were.

Same on opening up the barrel channel on an R8 as was the case with an R93.

In Germany a lot of customers pay the upgrade for the barrel preparation for muzzle brake or silncers. Which is very nicely done by Blaser including a fitted ring to protect the muzzle.

I need to handle one of the R8 success rifles and a safari synthetic.

The gunshops that would have them in LA are not near where I go to the doctor. We don't go to LA for any other reason.

I've got a safari synthetic I'd probably move at a good price. It was this set, with barrels in 458 Lott and 375 H&H:

They'll be making the R30 (year 2030) by the time you decide :-)
