lawndartQuestion about Kynoch rims, please.
Gents,
Are the rims on older Kynoch Berdan primed 470 NE cartridges too thin for compatibility with newer manufactured double rifles (in that caliber)?

AtkinsonDepending on caliber but most ammo and brass makers state the different rim thickness for that reason..and you can mic your rim chamber and the thick stuff shouldn't close on a thin chamber and the thin stuff doesn't seem to give one trouble in any chamber, but I personally wouldn't shoot it, there has to be a tad of headspace there I would think, but I know folks that have shot it for years with no ill effects.

Ray, are you trying to say they are different?
Since I have several hundred of both type laying around, I got curious this AM, so a miked a few handfulls of each. Rigby stuff made by B.E.L.L., I think, and Berdan primed Kynoch.
While I didn't write them down and run averages, it looks like the newer Rigby marked stuff is about a .001 thicker. HOWEVER, there is more variation between cases within the same brand than that. MFG. tolerances come into play.
I've used them interchangeably for years and never saw any difference or bad effects. Just my results. Everybody has to make their own conclusions.

AtkinsonHmmmm, for about the last century they have been selling thick brass rims and thin brass rims and they are different apparantly..I know some of the older guns will not take the thick rimmed case.

I wasn't aware that there was ever a "thick" rimmed case in .470, but there sure was in some cartridges.

The brass will be fine, with all the new 470 brass options out there I don't think it's worth fooling with though.

lawndartI now possess a lot of the Berdan primers, and will accumulate the various sizes of brass. We will see how things go with washing and annealing each case every time.

AtkinsonAfrican Hunter nailed me...That brass rim thickness was the difference in 450-400-3 inch with thick rims, and 450-400-3.25 that had thin rims. I had a senior moment there then he admonished me and brought it to my feeble attention that we were talking about the 470 and not double rifle cartridges in general..
