416 Rem Mag Build Login/Join

Well, after waaay too long, I'm getting ready to put together a 416 RM I've been wanting.

Couple questions, and looking for any general advice, since this will be the first big bore I've been involved with putting together.

I've done some homework, and picked a few trusted brains, and I beleive I'm off to a good start...

Here are some specifics so far;

Win SS M70 Classic .375 H&H rifle as donor for the action.

Lilja #5 .416-14 SS Tube

McMillan D'arcy Echols Legend Stock

Now where I am in need of help with is...

the length of the shank for the bbl

Which Open sights
(thinking of NECG Masterpiece)

final tube length
(thinking 22")

bottom metal
(thinking either pt&g for a stainless or williams for steel)

trigger pull weight
(thinking 5#)

I am unsure if I'm going to go with a cerekote, or simply bead blasting of the SS

Should I go with a removable brake (which one) for range work?

Please Advise. bewildered

If it were mine... NECG Masterpiece sights, 23" barrel, Williams bottom metal, trigger pull at 40 ounces and complete cerakote in matte black, absolutely no break. That is the set-up I have on my .404 Jeff... but in the end she is your baby! Good luck on your build out.

I would stay with the 24 inch barrel, that rifle does not kick that hard. You just get yourself some sort of shoulder pad or butt pad.

I would NOT put a muzzle brake on the rifle either! The balance of the rifle should be just a little barrel heavy.

I stopped using my .375-Weatherby some years ago, do to getting my .416mag in a model 70 Winchester.

For me it is the best balance between long and short barrels, the best of both worlds.

Regarding scopes, don't the best German and
Austrian products afford better light gathering
in the minimal natural light moments; just as
the sun starts to light the sky in morning and
as it's setting in evening??? And what about
the lighted reticle feature? The extra few min-
utes on each end of the day could allow you a
shooting opportunity that the lessor scope would
rob you of...

Did my Mod 70 (416 Rem a bit different). Mine is a blued action and I kept the factory barrel as it shot fine. NECG masterpiece front sight. Sunnyhill drop box bottom metal and a beautiful piece of Turkish; rust blued.
I do have a extra McMillan mod 70 safari stock (fiberglass) that is made to fit this rifle with the Sunnyhill bottom metal if I ever take it somewhere I do not want to destroy the nice stock.
Wood stock is 14"LOP & the FG stock is 13.75" LOP (thinking of Alaska for it application; heavier clothes)

It does not recoil enough to justify a muzzle brake. If well made (with three cross-bolts), you do not need a secondary recoil lug (unless your 'smith can do one strong, stout and handsome for not too huge a fee.

As always, I strongly recommend a Sako Hunter style stock for a Winchester 416 Rem Mag (if you are tall, long of neck and handsome of visage). The 416 fill will balance out just fine with a 24 - 26" barrel length and a 416 density stock fill. No need to go too heavy on the barrel.

Have Mark (Penrod) work over your safety, trigger, cocking piece and bolt release. The David Tubb, big ju-ju, lightweight cocking piece that comes with the Steel firing pin, aluminum shaft has a new cocking piece that does not have the unnecessary cut that the factory original piece is cursed with.

Be sure and get an improved version of the old style model 70 trigger. You will very glad you did. The bolt release should be enlarged by someone with skill in one hand and a TIG welder in the other.

Before leaping in, have a gunsmith that you trust, or that someone that you trust trusts. There is a better than even chance that the action is not square. Out-of-square actions yield out of square results down range on target paper and animals. Stan Ware, Mark Penrod and Warner Tool can square and true you action without a lot of hand ringing. Only accept single-point re-cutting to bring action threads square and straight. The bolt way can be reamed out straight courtesy of PT&G. Ancillary operations include re cutting the lug-ways via a single point, re squaring operation, re cutting the back of the lugs straight and true, and re cutting (only if needed) the face of the bolt. The Burgess and Orbendorf bolt styles are so darn good that it seams silly to this hillbilly to not just lop the factory Winchester handle of the bolt.

Building one of these 416's is never as cheap or easy as we would like, but what is?

I would use Talley scope mounts with the Brockman pop up peep sight for my rear sight. Thats a good combination for aging eyes (which I have). Another option is a Talley peep sight fitted to the rear base by Talley. Have your scope bases drilled to 8/40.

obviously a SS M70 action, a McMillan Echols Legend stock, a #5 Lilja SS tube, & a 2pc Williams Bottom metal...

Good lookin' rifle.

A couple years ago I put together a .416 RemMag but I used a Montana action, 24" Douglas barrel, McMillan "Winchester Supergrade" stock and NECG sights.

I've found that I shoot the NECG sights really well, somehow that sight picture works with my 52 year old eyes. Great choice!

I like to think of mine as my "Go anywhere in the World, survive the baggage handlers and shoot anything that walks, crawls or slithers" rifle. Big Grin
