Looks like a 752 series Old English. They have a standard (firmer) and Decelerator (softer) version. I've used both.

Did you prefer this one to a Silvers pad?

I have one and it works the same as the more common black coloured ones.

I thought it was going to be used on my custom lott but was just informed that Ralph is going with a Silvers original instead.

Silvers uses a rather hard rubber (or at least it seems like hard rubber - it's almost brick-like) for its pads. They are rather primitive in comparison with today's synthetic pads.

In olden days, the Silvers pad was the thing to have.

But these days, I would not want one on a hard-recoiling rifle.

I really like my Ruger pad.It is not thick so it doesn't take up too much of the wood and it is firm so it doesn't reduce LOP or send the rifle all the way back so that my hand hits my face under recoil.IMO,recoil pads should be like shocks or springs, the heavier the load, the stiffer they are.

I have a "Decelerator " on my 450 Dakota and it really works well. Very comfortable.

+ 1.
from what I have heard the SILVERS was not deigned with the reduction of recoil in mind but simply to provide more length to the stock.
The Galazan ones look similar to the SILVERS but are a little softer which might be an alternative.

If you want the best of both worlds put the red Decelerator on and have the traditional color which I too like and the absorbing quality of the Decelerator. If you're not worried about aesthetics I like the Mag XLT on the fast stout kickers. It's a pain to grind though.

Kick Eez pads are very good, I've used them on my trap and sporting clays guns for the past ten years and I rate them better than decelerators.

The downside with them is a poor range of colours.

That's what I had done on my Whitworth.

Great looking rifle, Charles.

The wood can't be factory, can it?

Is that a wing safety on the bolt shroud?

Thanks. To the best of my knowledge the wood is factory -- still had the Whitworth pad on it.

That safety is a Model-70 style two-position I got from Jim Kobe.

I had an early Whitworth that had wood similar to Mr. Helm's rifle. I sold it to Will.

Some of the early Whitworths had beautiful, dark wood.

Two PH's I know have 458 WHITWORTH's like that one but not as dark a stock as that one. Very light and great to carry but boy they have stout recoil.

I prefer the Silvers pad, but I'm not much on recoil pads anyway..Jack Belk told me all a recoil pad does is give the gun a one inch running start at you shoulder and he just might be right?

Held tight to the shoulder I can't tell much difference in a soft pad and a hard Silvers pad..I have shot some English big bores with metal butt plates and again held tight they don't wack you, held loose the get at you.

I like to leather cover my recoil pads on my big bores and the Silvers pads makes the job easier, and nicer looking as you can get the leather very tight on a hard pad IMO...
