470 Capstick
I don't see a lot of discussion or evidence of many users of the 470 Capstick. Why is this?

George has one, and I think Rip does.. When the 458 lott is available in a 800$ cz, it's hard to justify a fully custom, no real gain, difference in the capstick

the 470Mbogo clobbers it and the 470 AR matches it.

my son has one, but only because it was part of the winchester mod 70 safari set. never shot it, but the round is probably an excellent buff/ele one.

I have two .470 capsticks and it's a good round. Just a hair different than the 458 Lott, but due to components and ammo not quite as practical. However, I have found it more accurate than the 458 Lott, perhaps because of the ghost shoulder on the Capstick.

Capstick 100 fps more than the lott??

500grains,

would you think putting a shoulder on the Lott would be an improvement, feeding, accuracy or velocity wise?

PS: IMHO if you want that big a bullet, you are light years ahead to buy a CZ in 416 Rigby and bore the barrel to take the bigger .475" bullets.
I might be prejudiced, but there are a set of manson reamers sitting out in the shop for a .475 Gibbs. That's the spring of '08 project.

The ghost shoulder of the Capstick gives a paralell neck, wich gives a better grip on the bullet, wich again theoretically gives better precision. But I have made Lotts wich shoots MOA, so in pracsis, it does not do much. But it requires a two-die-set, while the Lott needs a tree-die-set.

That would be the 450 Ackley from which you can get 50 fps+ more than a Lott. Either can be made to feed properly. The Ackley should be more inherently accurate than the Lott.

Here is a typical 470 capstick group:

Is there a velocity gain with the 470 capstick over 458 lott???

in theory, the capstick goes 500gr at 2400fps...

i am here to tell you, 2300 is FAR nicer to shoot

I load mine to 470 nitro specs (500 @2150) most of the time as it is hard to beat a classic.\

It takes a while to blood them all.
I'll get there one day, with this one, M70 with 10" twist McGowen 4140 barrel:

Those North Fork Cup Points are now .475" instead of .474" and they even work in Chief Thunderstick's Winchester Custom Shop Big Five 470 Capstick with the loose barrel.

Velocity in his 24" loose barrel was 2296 fps with the new and improved 500 grainers, and other load components same as above.

Mike Brady improved the band design.

What level recoil would you guess the brake on your Weatherby custom brings the felt recoil level down to? .500 Schuler Jumbo?
